If you are in and around the Rhine this summer and have an interest in the influence the Romans had on Europe there are many events taking place to celebrate and expand your knowledge of the influence that Rome had on European history. Koln (Cologne) is very active and for 8 euro hosts an exhibition starting 27th June and running through to 19th Sept. http://www.museenkoeln.de/roemisch-germanisches-museum/
Germanies links with the Vatican and the election of popes through the centuries are well documented and maybe provide an insight into why Romes ambitions on the Holy Land followed right through to the second world war.
Also check out the tourist information sites as all sorts of cycle and walking events are planned. http://www.roemisches-rheinland.de/veranstaltungen/juli/index.html
