We went over this bridge a few years ago. It was very dramatic because you are driving though apartment blocks and then suddenly up in the air on very very thin looking towers.
How awful to see this now.

This year we went to Slovakia and Croatia through Germany and then back through Italy and went over quite a few bridges similar - always comforting ourselves that they surly must be well maintained!

So sad for the families of everyone involved.

How terrible that people have to live being oppressed by modern technology.

Its been said it was a lightening strike but they are already speculating that safety is being compromised due to the financial situation. Part of the bridge was being shored up at the time.

I wonder for what reason it collapsed?

Why's that Ian? don't tell me you were involved at the footings stage.

Sorry to make light of it as it surely must be dreadful for the relatives of those who perished.

Haven’t some of our bridges had trouble with the reinforcement rods rusting due to the road salt used in the winter.

My friend in Italy said tonight it’s very worrying as there have been a number of bridge failures in recent months.

You see many of our older motorway bridges being shored up.

Unbelievable
Sincere apologies for that entirely inappropriate post in this awful tragedy.
My mind was still focused on a technical train of thought of the possible cause, posted one minute previously.......
I recall reading about many issues with reinforced concrete constructions where the reinforcing rods were rusting/corroding and bursting/cracking the concrete.

I know that Spaghetti Junction in Birmingham had the same problem and extensive strengthening of the reinforcement rods in the columns and the road bases were carried out over a number of years. Fortunately they continue to monitor the condition on a regular basis.

The Chiswick flyover at the start of the M4 has had ongoing repairs for several years due to blown concrete, hopefully our Engineers are on top of it.

There's a grim photo in this article, allegedly take in July.

http://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/art...mbling-weeks-collapsed-killing-38-people.html

That bridge was in very dilapidated condition and how anyone could think it was safe for heavy traffic to continue to cross it is unbelievable.

If that bridge had been in the UK, it would have been closed indefinitely. It might still have collapsed under its own weight.

I like the way the Italian goverment are saying about finding who is responsible. Do they honestly think anybody will be, it will be dragged out for so long that anyone who is slightly responsible will be dead or claims immunity, or was at a bunga bunga party. They might hang out to dry some low officials but that’s about it.

As a chartered civil engineer what worries me most is people jumping to conclusions before any of the facts are known. That seems to be the only exercise that some politicians and newspaper editors seem to get!

Seen lots of reports suggesting that the tower falied and brought down the deck. However the only video I have seen that shows the tower falling show that the deck had already fallen.

Let's wait until the forensic specialists have gathered all of the best evidence they can before deciding what actually happened and why.

And why not, life is boring for the retired.

Olley's video did a decent analysis, I'll bet 50p he's not far wrong.

who is ave?

He's a french Canadian who does tool reviews and strip downs of things people send him, he seems well versed in a lot of technical stuff, he does swear a lot, and doesn't seem to care that because of this his vids get demonetised by youtube. His tool reviews are good, he pulls them to pieces and shows where they are likely to fail.

Quite correct.

Unfortunately, like with aircraft accidents, there is a lot of speculation initially, then when the real accident report comes out 1-2 years later it is poorly reported - mainly I think because newspapers do not have the technically-qualified reporters that they had years ago. The last real Aviation Correspondent I remember was Arthur Reid at the Times and that must have been a while before I retired from Aviation in 1992.

To fair to 'Ave' who compiled that analysis he pointed out several times that he is not an expert, although he seems to have an engineering background, and is only basing it on evidence so far. Further he invited other opinions into the 'Discussion'. Aside from his expletives, he did talk well - must be Canadian not US;)

From my limited engineering knowledge I would think one of the difficulties will be to determine which of the multiple failures occurred first? Then of course why back-up structures did not compensate.
