Sorry, but I disagree, most generators only give 8 amps at 12 volts and most mains chargers in vans between 15 and 20 amps and modern ones are better regulated to put the first 80% in at near maximum amps. So the mains will win. Of course you can use both. There are specialist 12 volt generators giving around 50 amps but the ones i hsve seen seem noisier than the suitcase ones.

Personally I find the noise of a modern suitcase generator much less disturbing than either a couple of screaming kids, or a few pissed motorhomers shouting the afternoon away.

That's better :D(y)

I have to say though, on the annoyance scale, a quiet(er) generator ran for a short while at a considerate time barely registers compared to those who play their music / TV loud enough that their neighbours are forced to listen to it. They do need something deeply unpleasant doing to them. Or a hearing aid / headphones if you want to be PC.

Now if they need a generator to play their music or TV loud enough to overcome the noise of the generator, then.... Well you know where this is going! :D2

Most generators give 8A constant (give or take) because the open circuit (unregulated) voltage is 18v to 20v. I take your point about modern PSUs though - I had in mind earlier 2-stage versions.

I have a Hymer BM640. I did a lot of research into generators after being told not to hook up a cheap 2-stroke. In the end I got hold of a very clever guy at Highbridge who are Hymer Dealers. He said that voltage fluctuations run the risk of blowing the ELKTROBLOCK which controls the m/homes 12v electrics A new one would have to be imported from Hymer Germany and cost over £2000 to supply and fit and over £700 to repair and there is only one official repairers in the UK. An Inverter gene gives sine wave current even better than household current. Hondas are so reliable so I bought one. First time start (unless I forget to switch on;)) and still runs sweetly after six years. Expensive yes but pay your money and accept your choice. I do a lot of off grid camping and no worries at all.

Probably a wind up...

Nope it's fact
I said any use for a generator can be got around using another method.

You said it couldn't.

It can ....connect the van to 240v

If you can't manage in a van without 240v then go to a site that supplies 240v

I find your thinking severely flawed and were we in private somewhere I might, just might summon up the energy to further the "debate" (knowing it wouldn't change your mind), but I know no one on here is interested in our attempts at petty point scoring on this matter so I will shut up...

Anyway, I fancy a delicious FB Steak and Ale pie, so I have to pop outside to fire up the genny for my oven.

I shall not get into a long explanation except to say that you have absolutely no idea.
I have good idea ...i know some people need 240 to operate medical equipment etc.

My point I made a few pages back that jj questioned is "there's nothing in a van you can't find another way of doing without using a generator " and it's true

A generator only produces 240 or 12 volt

Therefore a battery or a 240v hook up to electric provides both off those does it not?

Give me a minute and I'll start the Honda
Not many people can manage more than a few days off grid in winter especially when not traveling.

There is always a choice, If you want to use a generator reasonably with regard to people around then that is your choice.
If for some reason you can’t stand anyone using a generator even reasonably then you have a choice, you can go to a site which does not allow generators.

Oh Dear, Seems the Luddites are out in force. I am quite a simple person really.
1/ Sites with EHU, you don't need a Gene.
2/Sites without EHU but allow Gene's use them reasonably.
3/ If you don't like Genes go to a site which does not allow them.
I get fed up with self proclaiming "yellow jackets" walking up to people who use them and flapping their lips. I was at a rather large field with around 800-1000 motorhomes on it. I was working on my laptop processing photographs from the previous day and running my genny as the batteries were running low on the laptop and motorhome when the genny stopped and lost my pictures I was processing. The officious prat next door switched it off and remonstrated with me asking if I was a member of the CCC. I told him that I gave up my membership because of people like him and threw him hard back to his own motorhome The fact that 5 gennys were running within 25 yards from me made no difference to him. I own a Honda 20i and was the quietest there. Incidentally the site allows the use of gennys and I have seen up to 70 gennys without really trying. I have been going to this site for over 10 years now. Do I have to put up with prats like that!

I suppose the answer to that is a resounding YES!(y). Especially if YOU not the complainer, has to live with said "person"!!!:D. FAR better IMV to upset half a dozen "Campers" for a short period, than suffer at the hands of one who is in a "Bad Hair Day" Mood!!:D

Honda all the way they’re expensive but worth it.

I’ve just bought the new model 2.2i for the same price as the outgoing 2.0i and got a free Honda generator cover.

The reasons for Honda:

Service! World wide dealerships with stock and service so if you are abroad and you have any issues then you have no problem getting sorted pretty quickly.

Silent running: it’s really quiet and a low throb rather than a high shrill.

8 hours running time on part throttle.

Will run on propane ( with reduced out put.(with propane optional kit)
If your looking at the lower end then I’d look at the Hyundai kit it pretty good... noise level is noticeably higher ( mate has one and there’s a noticeable difference)

Again it depends on your usage mines a biggy but it gives extra capacity for race weekends as well as touring etc.

I have the Hyundai 2000sei with remote start, and I bought a rain cover which quietens it a bit more.
I’ve had it 2 years and only used it once on our last motorhome which had a piddling 30 watt solar panel factory fitted ( Auto Sleeper ) I needed it for my CPAP machine.
My current van I have fitted 200 watt of solar and an extra battery, but it’s fitted with a compressor fridge so will have to see how I now go on whether the generator is needed or not.

John.

Honda all day long!

I'm thinking of buying one at the moment. Turn off someone's generator is a real no, no in my book. You have no idea what they need the power for, it could be running for a medical device reason and then you'd be in real trouble.

I bought a Honda lawnmower years ago as the engines are amazing; they were said to be the best. The problem was, the engine fell through the cheap rusty steel deck after a few years and had to go to the dump (I did keep the engine though, I thought, I'll need that one day - never have though).

I then bought a Hayter mower with an aluminium deck (paid extra and its been going for years) Although, sadly, I think they are even made in China these days. After 2 years it wouldn't start so I stripped the battery pack down (it's electric start) and found the battery terminal had corroded through completely. Then, the starter key switch broke so I had to hot wire it!

Sadly, real "old school" quality is so very hard to find these days as it's all about profit.
