Love Big Gertie to death but the diesel engine sure is "industrial" and the gearchange is ambitious to say the least! Reminds me of an old Mini I had - the correct gear is in there somewhere, but getting it can be something of a challenge, especially 3rd.

Any easy modifications (aka inexpensive!) that can be done?

Thanks

Easy modification is to trade her in. Alas I fear that there is unlikely to be a cheap modification.

Its because of the RHD conversion. They were originally LHD with column change. The linkages get worn on the floor change and its like stirring a pudding after a while. There are specialists such as Delfin Designs who can fix it cheaply.

They aren't difficult to fix if you have a friend with a lathe. The parts that wear are the selector collar (big nut thing on top of the box with two flats to take a spanner) and the rocker assembly (relay lever assembly) adjacent to it (on the left as you look from the front of the van. The selector collar needs sleeving to bring it back to size and the rocker needs two bushes & the sleeve they bear on. An hours lathe work will sort both. Adjustment is as per Fiat information and despite reputation is not over-critical.

Other very easy checks are the two screws that hold the gear lever under the cab floor covering - just make sure they are tight - and one on the base of the gear lever accessible from under the van.

If all these areas are addressed the gearchange is pretty good and are what Delfin used to do.

Edit: Just re-read Barclaybashers post. There's a link to Link Removed
- that has all the info & parts you need.

I cant figure out how power steering can tighten your gearchange !!!!

Small family outfit, make, machine all the parts themselves, owners father has Talbot Express, told me about the gear change when I was there - might be able to do the work anyway

Thanks for the tip about my throttle cable (y) - it wasn't stretched but there was an inch of travel between inner and outer - no power because the throttle only half open

The old Talbot gear change! bit like stirring the pot hoping you don't crack you knuckles on the dash! They are in there somewhere!
I had a Delfin Designs Up grade done, you can tell if you have by looking at the linkage on top of the G/Box, if its goldie coloured it's been done.
To be honest! it didn't make all that difference, the stick still waggled around alot! and I still cracked my knuckles:doh:
I guess its one of those idiosyncrasys that make driving a twenty year old vehicle a joy:laughing:

Hi,
I know this is an old forum thread but my father in law has a 1997 Autosleeper talisman that has gearbox issues and we are struggling with getting replacement parts or gearbox. Could anyone please assist as to where to contact in our quest for a solution.
Thanks

Hi Winger, thank you. I did contact Mike and hopefully I can get sorted with the parts. Mike seems to be a nice chap.
