2008 early X250.
It has the known reverse judder issue and I think this caused it to fail to come out of reverse gear.
Finally forced it out all seemed ok.
After some motorway work I found I could not select 4th.
All other gears ok including 3rd.

4th won't select with engine running or with engine off.

So it seems like it may be a selection problem and not a syncro problem etc. Inside the box.

I shall have a good luck when I can.

My theory is that the judder moved the selector mech a bit and me forcing it out made it worse.

Any advice offered please?

Are the cable ends properly captive etc?.

At a quick look I can see the interlock rising and falling on the top of the box like it should.

Thanks in advance.

Just a quick update to say in the end it was nothing to do with the reverse judder issue.
It was a broken diff gear.
I guess 4th was jammed by debris which also accounted for the variable gear shift quality!
Also in retrospect it was then obvious how I could rive it home up the motorway (diff gears virtually stationary but still under static load) but could not maneuver virtually at all with a lot of steering lock on.

It has been fitted with a recon gearbox now by the dealer I bought it from, at (fortunately) no cost to me.
Excellent service from Hayes Leisure.
