Hi guy can anyone help
Got 2001 2.8 jtd gear box coming out but need to know once out how easy to get the casing off
to look at gears
Many thanks Jack(y)(y)(y)

I believe that the top cover with the selectors is removable on most gear boxes & that is the only way to strip down & reassemble , or inspect, through the top. Apart from 5th gear which at that year I believe is still the add on at the back end of the box behind the metal cover.

Stripping a gearbox and reassembly is not an easy DIY job and all too easy to mess up and ruin the box

What problems are you having with it
Many thanks for your reply
I thought well i know the thrust bearing was making a noise so did a clutch change (T/bearing rusted hard to get off) Put back together same noise.Oil in the gear box was clear no swarf what so ever it still pulls like a train goes into every gear as it should no slipping no grinding. Just cant think what it can be Saying that i have only driven it 8 miles back home from clutch replacement a couple of mate have said needs bedding in any thoughts would be great

Obviously not there, so can't hear the noise or feel the gearbox. If it has clean oil but the thrust bearing was rusted, I would "guess" it has got wet, by water overflowing from the scuttle drain. An important point with the older 5 speed box, is it isn't a 5 speed. It was a 4 speed as designed then in their wisdom, to save money, fiat added an overdrive type 5th gear. This often runs dry as it is just splash lubricated. A simple fix is to add extra oil. But if it has been run dry, the bearing on that shaft will need replacing

It is a very common fault and all the gearbox specialists kept the upgraded parts on the shelf. As the vans affected have got older and rarer, parts are now hard to find, and expensive
