GBP/Euro at 1.20. Anyone buying early?

When we were buying our van I needed quite a few € so I read every web site expert opinion and prediction as far as the future was concerned, I have to say they were singularly unreliable so your guess would be as good as any in my book.

I just got £500 which came out at 600 Euro highest its been for a while, going to keep an eye out see if it goes higher and might buy some more for our trip to France and Spain in April. I used Revolut to get mine then if your paying in Euro's it will take it out of your Euro balance Pay in UK Pounds it comes out of your UK Pound balance keeps it simple,

We go in five weeks and I've bought just €500 recently. I might just act now and buy some more!

John

I have been watching the £/€ for weeks and it has been quite stable between €1.90 and €1.20..

I am not rushing, as my personal view is that the Ukraine crisis could damage the € more than the £.

The £/PLN (Polish Zloty) has moved from £1 = PLN 5.45 to £ = 5.75 in the last week, so about 5%, but for us will just about make up for inflation.

Where are you buying €?

I’m an airline pilot and we all carry Revolut cards. You can exchange currency in the app instantly and the card always pulls payments you make in the local currency you are in with no fees etc. I don’t think you will find a flight deck without one of these cards these days

Anyway they offer a £60 referral for friends. If anyone uses my link I’ll split it with you £30 each.

You have to set up the account and make a deposit from your bank and then 3 separate transactions of £5 or more. Then I get £60.

So if you did that and spent £15 you get £30 back.

All legit, you can also pull out £400/€400 a month in cash from ATM’s fee free on the basic free account. I use it as my regular card in the U.K. Europe and the US and just top it up from my Halifax account as I need.

Oh. It has to be done within 6 days to get the referral fee

If I knew that it would be benificial to buy now I'd get £50K worth and sell later. I'd also use this wisdom to invest in some shares.

It's all speculation so I shall continue just to use my card when I get there. Using a decent credit card/debit card with good rates and low/no fees will probably beat taking cash anyway.

I assumed the OP was planning on buying € into his currency account on a card like Revolut, I might be wrong of course.

It’s been around 1.20 for a few weeks, in January just before leaving for Spain I bought £2000 worth using the Post Office online where I got around €1.17 which seemed to be the best deal around.

I have a FairFx multi currency card and a recently acquired Post Office card. I am looking at cash for my back pocket. I have started using my NWBS credit card when in Europe as it appears to do for us!

I would certainly keep a few quid aside for a potential currency exchange, immediately before your departure John.

Once the full Russian sanctions kick-in during March then, in theory, these actions should generate a huge negative counter effect on the European markets.

The pound will still have a degree of exposure to the effects of the Russian sanctions but not to the same extent as the euro so, with a bit of luck, the exchange rate will stay in our favour and push beyond the 1.20 limit for the foreseeable future.

Expect big fuel price hykes in certain countries though (IMO).

All speculation though - but that's what I'm expecting.

I've been tempted to buy some Euros but whether at home or abroad pre-Covid I've only ever carried around £50 max in cash and use my debit cards. I haven't had a credit card since handing back my company Amex card in 1983.
I don't keep any record of what I spend when on a trip but it would certainly be far more than I want to carry in cash.
(I haven't used any cash whatsoever since May '20 and I even pay my window cleaner online).

I looked into all the cards recently.
Revolute, Monzo, Wise, Starling, Curentsea, FXfair, and a few more.

Revolute is run by Russians, Monzo is run by a splitter from Starling, Wise is OK, but Starling, if you are UK based and mostly have pounds and normally only want Euro's comes out tops.

I opened up a Starling £ account recently, put in some money, which then permits you to open up a € account which I transferred a load into, so I now have Euro's at £1.00=€1.19 whatever happens to the rates in the next few months.

The days of taking Travellers Cheques or bundles of cash on your trips abroad have gone.
An account in the local currency is the way to go, which means you choose the time to make the conversion from £ to €.

Nikolays partner is a Ukrainian (with a British passport), so Revolut is at least 50% Ukrainian owned.
But I think Nikolay is Russian, he was brought up and studied in Russia and his Dad is a genuine original Oligarch, as he is currently head of Gazprom (although if he is Ukrainian, I'd guess he is packing right now)

However when I was looking at banks the Russians had not invaded, so that was not part of my decision making process, I was more concerned that Revolute seemed to be sailing close to the wind having had the CFO resign over non-compliance rules not being strictly adhered to, which with people with Russian connections at the top should have been something that Revolute should have been squeaky clean about.

Good afternoon,

How do you prove that you have 120 euros per day for the duration of the trip to enter France which is supposed to be one of the rules as a third country or has the eu abandoned that rule ?

I'd show them the link from my currency card to my UK bank account?

Show a bank statement.

As far as I'm aware that rule only comes into play if you apply for the 180 day visa.
In which case you also need an address when you will be staying for the period

Have a look on this site, there was discussion about this a few weeks ago

The best I got for £1000, was 1.178 last Monday. We are generally only talking a few cents either way, so not much point in waiting.

I have Revolut and very pleased with it, however it is Russian owned so wonder if that will be blocked soon?

Wow, I didn't know that. Very glad that I went with Wise, instead, when I wanted borderless accounts.
