Not illegal if fitted before January 2021 I've read. You can continue to use the old plates but must display a GB oval. Or UK one after 28th Sept.

No that's about the same as I read, GB is not valid. But not illegal.Ah, we must be reading different rules and regs of which there are many

"Drivers also need to remember that number plates featuring the blue band and letters 'GB' next to the European golden stars are also no longer valid," Mr Dennis warned.

We'd like a white version for the rear end of Brunhilde, please ... With a 'Please don't ask me where I'm from; I'm trying to work out where I'm going' supplementary sticker in French, pleaseI've just returned from a five day trip to France in a hired UK VW transporter van.
It had no country identifying stickers on it at all but was every obviously a UK hire van as it was signwritten. I had a gendarme behind me on the A83 for about 20kms and he could have easily stopped me at the peage south of Nantes.
I not sure there is anything in the traffic code that enables le flic to issue a fine for not showing a cc sticker - I can't find a specific mention of it.
Anyway ... from a pure aesthetic point of view the oval UK sticker looks awful - very spiky and harsh looking. 'GB' is more rounded and so looks better within the oval boundary.
I think I have found the UK sticker to put on the bodywork of my silver Hymer....

UK, not "English". And the problem is the UN, not the UK. We've told the UN (who have an international convention on road traffic) that UK vehicles should now be identified abroad with a 'UK' sign, not a 'GB' sign. No idea why we didn't have a UK one to start with. So, technically, your local gendarmerie could look up 'GB' in the UN lists, decide there was no 'GB', and cause trouble for you.Honestly? .... An English rule?.... to be applied abroad? Indeed?
Not to worry , no trouble at all.... I'm French ! Plate is French papers are French, so no rule applies here.UK, not "English". And the problem is the UN, not the UK. In practice, of course, no-one actually gives a to**, and I'm pretty sure displaying 'GB' is not illegal anywhere, even here, and the UN hasn't even got around to changing the lists anyway, so you're more likely to get into trouble by displaying 'UK' than by displaying 'GB'.

What does UN mean by the way?

There is a vast difference between no longer valid and illegal. They are no longer valid for travel abroad as they do not show U.K. They are not illegal. For travel abroad the vehicle needs to have a U.K. sticker. Whether this is in the form of a number plate sticker over the existing or a separate sticker showing U.K. doesn’t matter.Ah, we must be reading different rules and regs of which there are many

Isn't it French for '1'? . Going back to our previous exchange about learning rude language, you should now reply to me:Not to worry , no trouble at all.... I'm French ! Plate is French papers are French, so no rule applies here.

I've done thousands of miles in the EU without a GB sticker, suppose I'll do a few more without a UK one.
I’m the opposite, I’ve always referred to here as the U.K. This is the first time I’ve ever put a country sticker on any vehicle. Although the van and the motorbike both came with GB plates.I have always preferred Great Britain to United Kingdom, so wont be changing my plates anytime soon.

I bought the small blue number plate stickers with U.K. on them. They did cost £1.89 delivered mind, so they had better not change again anytime soon at that price.
UN = 1 yes ... probably why I didn't think about saying it with 2 separate lettersIsn't it French for '1'? . Going back to our previous exchange about learning rude language, you should now reply to me:
'Thanks, you facetious old bugger' ...
