hi all,, I live in Spain and was looking at installing a gaslow twin 11kg system to our motorhome - been quoted by the authorised dealer over here 1245 euros fitted - seems expensive to me ? What’s the U.K. cost for supply and fit as might be we wait until in the U.K. next ?

My problems is we are setting off on a 5000km trip through Spain , France , Italy, Germany and Austria and don’t think two 13kg Spanish bottles will last us

That is very expensive. Although we had our system negotiated in with the price of the van, it certainly would have been far less than the price you’ve been quoted.

We had 2 x 11kgs cylinders, automatic changeover, exterior filler and exterior gas point (BBQ).

Photographs if required. (y)

You would be about £700 for all the equipment you would need, so 2 bottles, pigtails, changeover valve and filler hose. If you have a big enough locker ready to go the only tricky bit of fitting would be drilling the hole for the filler point. Maybe £200 for fitting?

All you need is a spanner for actually setting up all the bottles and hoses.

So you saying something you can install yourself ?

Yeah. It's just a case of connecting all the hoses and tightening up with a spanner.

Buy a tin of leak detection spray to make sure no gas is escaping.

Filler point to 1st bottle

Connecting filler hose from 1st bottle to 2nd

Pigtail from each bottle to changeover valve.

And changeover valve connected to your vans gas regulator.

Bought a 2 x 11kg gas low kit from flee bay £529, easy to fit just need a 70mm hole bite for the filler.

Great thanks, will see what they charge for supply only , as I think their fitting costs are in excess of €600 for labour alone

There are of course the ample YouTube videos to show you how to install.

Quite straightforward to fit ,all the info is on the gaslow website. The most daunting part is drilling a hole in the van for the fill point.
I opted to put our fill point inside the locker. Not ideal for some folks but better than in the door and I have never been refused a fill up because of it being inside. Have a look on YouTube for some installation tips.

You could also consider just one Gaslow and one of your Spanish bottles as reserve.

We have one 11kg Gaslow and a 6kg Calor as reserve when in UK. Before we travel to Spain, we swap the Calor for a Repsol exchange bottle.

So you saying something you can install yourself ?
I sincerely hope so! We have just ordered an 11kg single bottle but with a dual regulator so we have a 6kg Calor backup and can also use that for the barbecue. FYI, we were charged £440 for the kit (delivered UK) from Gaslow. The website picked up that we are in Spain right now and it appeared, although I did not pursue it, that it could have been delivered to Spain. Looking at the YouTube videos on installation, it all looks very straightforward. Carl at Gaslow was a great help. I sent him pictures of our present twin Calor bottles sitting in the licker of the MH and he sent the links for everything we needed to order.
Good luck and safe travels 👍

Its easy to fit refillable, I've done it several times now (moving it from one MH to another so it's now in it's 6th incumbent), you can assess the best place for the filler and if you go for the smaller one supplied by Gasit rather than the larger Gaslow one its a doddle - you can mix and match what you want so don't have to get it all from one supplier.

This is a link to a website I made when we had a Globecar Campscout which gives info on installing:

Forgot to say, a single bottle would be sufficient along with a Spanish one as a back-up, we have 2 simply because we do wild camping so can use a fair bit of gas if the weather is chilly and don't want to move on too often, however if I had to start from scratch I'd probably just go with a single cylinder and non-refillable as back-up.

Great thanks, did consider one and one, but we also wild camp a lot and all year round so don’t want to run short at anytime

only part thats harder is drilling the hole for the fillerand hole for the filler pipe out of the locker
Mine goes down through the bottom of the gas locker and the exterior filler is mounted on a plate bolted to the chassis. No body drilling and still easy access to fill up. (y)

I used the drop vent in the gas locker so only had to drill a hole for the filler itself.

Propane gas bottle in France is Euro1 deposit plus the gas

That is very expensive.
But normal for here. They have to supply an installation certifiucate +test as well.

Here ae some cheaper ones but you are paying for there installation certificate to be signed off along with the tes certificate. If you click on the 80€ test link you will see that any installation has to have been tested at least every 4 years to comply with the vehicle insurance..

To all those saying how easy it is to do remenber the OP is in spain where most things require homologation= adding to your logbook.
What you can do in the Uk, giratory seat bases, gas installation, towbar , 240v electrics ,etc;etc; etc all require the coc certificate for the item, + an installation certificate from the installer to be able to be added to the ficha tecnica.
Whilst swopping to a refillable system from an existing might go unnoticed it has to be remembered that it might not.

this is very true, although I did ask the dealer where I got it and they said that the refillable gas would not need homologation, but as you say this does very much depend on where you are

Our friends who live in Francehad a gas tank on theirs but when they went to register it inFrance it was a nightmare. The tester said it needed a special part or he could not pass it but he did not know what the part was called. It turned out to be a small collector to ensure no liquid gas could get into the system. Even though he had the Stako certificate of conformity he still had to get that part. Not sure if Spain has a similar test

When i bought my van, my dealer charged me £560 for two Gaslow 11kg cylinders and all the necessary pipe work, external filler and European adapters and fitted it for free, there really is not much work involved in fitting the system.
