Gaslow Cylinder Gauge

Depends which gauge it is. The old ones were useless but the new Gaslow gauges are much more accurate if slightly pessimistic.

This is the gauge I have on my modern Gaslow bottle. Its just a single 6kg but when its been down as low as showing empty I have found its been about half a litre+ left in. So on a larger bottle I guess you might have a litre left when showing empty. When I have filled around the other levels its been pretty accurate.

I have an underslung tank and have the same issue with the led graduation line gauge. It’s 9 years old so don’t know if there is now a more accurate one out there.

We also have those gauges and find them accurate, however as we have 2 bottles I keep one closed and just turn it over to the second bottle when the first one is empty.
This then gives me the prompt that I have 2 weeks to fill up.
Same for us except we don't have a gauge on one of the cylinders so it's always used first until we've used a fair bit then change to the other.

On the Alde heating system if we did that we would have to reset boiler by disconnecting the 12v supply to reset. Any interruption to the gas supply requires this reset.

Do you all remove your Gaslow cylinders to refill them or can they have an external filler pipe added to them for ease of filling pls ?

It would seem from the info in the thread you need a gauge with a float not a pressure gauge. I would imagine its a specialist product if it exists for your particular tank.

Once fitted the only time you should ever need to remove them is if you're moving them to another MH, selling them on, or if they are being replaced due to getting to their 'expiry' date.

They are filled from a separate filler point which can be mounted internally in the gas locker* or externally.

*These are sometimes an issue as garages can refuse to let you fill them as they are obviously cylinders rather than underslung tanks.

Ours is an older 3010 and we don't need to do that. Is yours a newer one?

Ours will just restart once it has gas pressure restored.

I've got the same newer gauges on my Gaslow bottles and agree that they are pretty accurate. I don't need to go looking to fill until I'm approaching the red zone - and even then there is typically 20 to 25% remaining.
Ditto

The diagram is very useful especially for anyone new to the system, note the difference in the gauge readings between 1) full & 7) empty. My 2nd fill was with a totally empty cylinder after filling I thought the gauge was still the same and reading empty. Gaslow explained the subtle differences which isn’t easy to see if the gas locker has restricted height which makes reading the gauge a tad awkward

I have an external filling point. The only time I have been refused gas was at an Italian autoroute station. Apparently it is illegal in Italy to fill from LPG pumps for anything other than ICEs. The attendant advised me to go to a smaller garage off the autoroute. This I did and filled up without any problems.

Not forgetting that before you fill, you need to close the supply side of both cylinders.
Hi Jon... every day is a school day for me - I've always filled our cylinders without turning them off but will not do so in the future. I assume by turning the supply side off you mean the yellow knob at head of cylinder? Why is the advice to turn them off given - what would happen if not (just a question and not something I intend doing!!!!)

Yes, close the yellow knob on both cylinders (supply side).

The pressure of the lpg entering your tanks is significantly higher than what the regulator is designed to handle.

If the regulator fails (however unlikely), you end up with liquid propane in the pipes that are going to, say, the gas hob.

Imagine what happens when you have liquid propane evaporating out of your hob with an igniter on!

Spoiler: it's called a BLEVE (boiling liquid expanding vapour explosion.)

This is the thing that happened when some idiot was allegedly trying to fill a non refillable cylinder at Morrisons, and why we had problems with getting filled there for a few months.

Hope this helps.😁

Ours is a 3020 and it just restarts as well, I have no need to disconnect the 12v supply.
