My friend says dealers are required by law to perform a gas safety check and carry out a habitation service prior to selling a used motorhome. Obviously this is preferable, but is it a legal requirement?

I dont think its a legal requirement in any way, you may be thinking of Landlords who have to have a gas check every year.

We not only gas check and habitation service but do a mechanical service as well plus a new MOT where applicable

Thanks for clarification. I thought it probably wasn't. I did get a new MOT and there are receipts for major service and cambelt change from last summer. I may get a hab service done in due course then.

No legal requirement as Peter says but "under sale of goods act" it does have to be "of merchantable quality".

I would be disappointed with a dealer that did not include a full habitation service with any sale

Yes, its what I would normally expect, but maybe its how he is able to keep his prices quite low.

It will cost between £100 - 200 for your own habitation service including damp report

At least it will be totally independent, I would get one done if I was you as soon as you can, then you have a decent chance of redress on supplying dealer if anything is found

Thanks, thats a good idea.
