Yes, thank you
Having just read the post on using refillable gas tanks got me thinking of when we had a Hobby Motorhome and had it serviced while we were touring Northern Germany, We were near the factory at Fockbeck and enquired about a service while we were in the area. Were directed to the nearest Hobby dealership about 500 metres away and they spoke excellent English after our poor German attempts. They were surprised that we ran the fridge off the battery when on the move as they use the gas to cool the fridge most of the time, they explained that the gas had an accident shut off valve and that it was quite legal in Germany to use when traveling and cooled the fridge better and less battery drain but on some tunnels you had to use the electric. I said as far as I knew it was illegal to do so in the UK and they could not understand why if a safety cut off valve was fitted.
Does anyone know the answer and if its okay to do so in other EU states?

Just to be pedantic, when the engine's running and the fridge is on 12V it isn't actually running off the battery; it's receiving 12V power from the vehicle's alternator (all the while the engine's running).

Once my fridge has been cooled by gas or EHU the 12V keeps it cool whilst driving.
Regardless of regs (E.U. or otherwise) I prefer to run it on 12V when driving since the supply of gas (even cheap refillable) is finite whereas on my m/h the 12V is always available whilst the engine is running.
(My gas system doesn't have an emergency cut-off valve).

I agree with Spriddler - 12v is free (effectively) whilst driving, parking etc. but on both we've had so far, 2009 Bessacar and 2013 Pilote Ref, is only supposed to keep the fridge and freezer at whatever temperature it was at before you turned the ignition key. If either is empty though, tends not to be so good!

If a crash valve is fitted then the gas can be left on. I always turn the gas off, even if it has a crash valve it's safer off. It has to be off in the tunnel.

Thanks, That's what I wanted to know
