Hi,
When I have previously travelled to Europe for long periods of time I have carried spare propane bottles.

2 x 6kg Gas It bottles fitted yesterday with an internal filler.

My question is am I likely to encounter any difficulties when topping up the bottles in UK and Europe.

We are off to Spain, Portugal and possibly Morocco in November for a 4 month trip ( I am aware of the issues in Morocco)

PS I have purchased the LPG adapters for Europe.

Thanks Tim

No problem in obtaining LPG in Europe mostly ALL motorway services carry it if you find yourself in a remote location and need it. Most large supermarkets carry it also.

If your filler is inside the locker and not in the side skirt then expect hassle at some filling stations epecially Spain and France. (Of course you may get away with it depending on how destracted the attendant is!) When they see you poking a nozzel into an open door they often refuse to turn on the pump.

If you can for your own sanity fit the filler in the skirt, as they then think you have dedicated gas tanks.

Do you have any actual evidence of this? We have a filler inside the locker and have never had a problem anywhere. This year in Spain I struggled as I think theres a new adapter which we don't have the attendant came over and having seen the doom and gloom no filler in the locker threads was worried but he opened a box to search through to find the correct adapter and filled it for us he couldn't have been more helpfull. By all means fit the filler in the skirt if you want to and it might look neater although not as convenient a height when filling and harder to remove if you want to keep it when you sell but we fitted ours 5 years ago and have never ever had a problem in the UK Spain or France.

Thanks guys. The filling point was the issue. I have fitted it internally as it was not suitable to fit on the skirting. I did consider the locker door but the hose may have become worn through opening the door. Thanks for your responses.

We've had this happen twice to us so yes it does happen but as we have 2 x 11kg bottles we don't have to fill up that often.

We were "inspected" when trying to fill the gas inside a locker once in France, others have looked from the window to see we were filing via a filling point and not direct to the cylinder before turning the pump on.

I have the Gas-It filler on my locker door
and as I only open the door for the Tunnel and ferry to prove the tanks are off for their safety procedures I have no problem with pipework

AND
as I'm disabled being unable to bend down to skirt height it means I can fill with ease

Our lpg nozzle is inside the locker and on the few occasions we filled in France and Spain this summer we had no problem even when we needed help, perhaps we were lucky. I think the app I use is called fill lpg, either is good for finding supplier. We have 2x11kg and leave one turned off so we know we need to refill. Have a good trip.

I must have been very lucky then. When I fitted the gasit stuff I decided to do it the easy way after all its only a matter of adding the extra bits later if needed and very little extra in terms of the cost compared to fitting a filler in the skirt in the first place as I said never ever refused or queried. If they looked out of the window it could well have been to see if you were illegally filling a calor cyl rather than worried about the filler being in the locker to me the extra cost and hassle of fitting an external filler would not be worth avoiding someone looking out of the window at me!. Each to their own.

If you want to put a filler on a locker door than Gaslow has a hose with a 90 degree bend to allow specifically this as Gas-it has something similar or could take hoses from Gaslow.

I decided not to bother with that as it would leave a hole in the door if I removed it later but it would have been an easy mod if there had been any queries when filling and the same hose would have easily reached just would have needed the outside filler point as I think I already have the 90 degree bend.

Not sure what you are saying but we did have the filler point in the gas cupboard (how dealer fitted it) and as I said only once were we inspected but a few times the attendant has looked before switching the pump on. New van has skirt filler and so far since April no issues.

I was just saying the attendant looking wouldn't have been enough of a problem for me to get my wallet out to alter it!.

Thanks for your help and guidance. LPG app on phone various adapters to hand. What can go wrong??!

If you are a first time refillable user just be wary of the potential splashback when removing the nozzle.I always wear gloves and some people wear safety glasses.Certainly don't be closely watching what you are doing when removing the nozzle.

And I always wear leather gauntlets. When the attendant filled ours for us in Spain he gestured to turn away before removing the nozzle.

Well why not just say that? We didn't either as we never had a problem getting filled but I will say it is much easier with the external filler. :D2

My Gaslow filler is in the locker door with a 90 deg. elbow, plus the Gaslow hose has a stainless steel mesh outer covering so little chance of abrasive wear through the (very infrequent) opening and closing of the locker door.
I have one Calor and one refillable (belt 'n braces'), both permanently connected although as 90% of my touring is 'over there' I've only once had to switch over briefly to the 'reserve' gas in the Calor cylinder.

There are 2 sizes of filler point, the large round one and a smaller square one, the smaller one is much cheaper and easier to fit.

Does anyone know where I can get grey filler point box for lpg. Getting system fitted next month and want to use same colour fittings as the rest of our van.

On the smaller one don't yo need to screw the UK bayonet adaptor in to fill in UK?

I bought a white Gas-it filler to fit on our white skirt. After close inspection, it looks like it is a black filler sprayed white.
So, you could just get a black one and spray it yourself.

For DIY I found the the round one easy to fit as the hole can be cut in seconds with an ordinary hole cutter in a drill. Cutting a square hole 'aint quite so straightforward with my available tools.
