Gas can trouble (1 Viewer)

Hi,
My mother-in-law recently bought her first motorhome and I was helping her connect up this gas can, but even with a spanner I just can't do it tight enough to stop the gas from escaping.
And I was wondering, is there meant to be some kind of rubber washer between the pipe and the can, or am I just generally missing something?

Thanks

Ninko

You need to take it to someone who knows what they are doing, to check for safety, leaks etc, to tell you what you need and to connect everything up safely.

I assume it's propane, it's in a red can.
If there's no washer required, why can't I do it up tight enough to stop gas escaping, it's only a screw on pipe, surely you don't need an expect every time you need to connect up a gas can?

Is it one of these where the gas is escaping from?

get some soapy water on it so you can see exactly where it is escaping from.

Thanks.
I think that's the same connector but it doesn't have that red circle bit on it, it's just a brown rubber hose.

Are you saying the brass fitting doesn't have the red regulator? What's on the other end of the brown hose?
1) Yes a red regulator similar to that in thread above
2) No, brass connector to brown hose
3) Where does other end of brown hose go and what is it connected to?

Gas should go through red regulator to become low pressure or,
should go through fitting at high pressure to a wall mounted regulator to become low pressure

It seems to fit on alright and screw up, it just doesn't seem to seal tight.
I'm pretty sure it's brown, it's like those little gas pipes you use to have in science at school that connected your bunsen burner.

Some propane fittings do have a rubber seal or an o ring on them, especially the "hand tighten" ones, does the end look as if there is a groove for an o ring or does it have a step on it ? It normally should be just a shallow cone shape, Google images will show you, but as some have said, a nick, ding or bit of crap will allow it to leak.

You're talking about the cheapest type of rubber hose by the sounds of it - how old is it? They need replacing every 3 years I believe (haven't had one for yonks so just going from memory!).

If its a bottle top regulator then you might be best getting a new one at the same time as replacing the pipe (neither are expensive) so you know you have a good set-up rather than use second-hand ones which you haven't got a clue of the age of.

It’s quite obvious to me that @Ninko hasnt got a clue and it’s dangerous to try and help he needs a expert to look at it IMHO. Just saying(y)(y)

GO TO A GAS SUPPLIER OR MOHO/CARAVAN CENTRE TO GET IT LOOKED AT.

And,yes,I am shouting. Don’t mess with what you don’t understand if it is capable of killing you.

@Ninko try and take a photo of the connection and also what the pipe goes to, propane gas is not something you want to be messing with if you don’t know what you are doing.

It would seem likely (colour is not important). How do you know where the gas is escaping from? Have you tried using soapy water? There are several places that gas might escape from.
Some pigtails (the bit that screws into the cylinder) do have a rubber washer. There will be a groove where the insert should be, whereas standard fittings have no groove and are slightly domed.

They should not need to be tightened very hard. Better to get someone who knows what they’re doing to have a look. But, if it was my mother-in-law, …

Its not unknown for the bottle threads or sealing face to be damaged, I had a Propane bottle that had the brass tread knocked pretty hard and it went oval, bugger to get regulator screwed in and sealed, If we had not been in Spain it would have gone straight back.

DO AS @Podney SAYS - I'm SHOUTING TOO. If you need to ask these questions you should not be attempting the job. Depending on the position of the regulator, and I'd like to think you know what a regulator is, the hose could carry LPG at appliance pressure (minimal) or at over 100psi. NO GAS CONNECTION NEEDS TO BE AS TIGHT AS YOU ARE DESCRIBING.

Even tho' I'm new here I have camped for years and have seen a caravan destroyed in minutes by a faulty gas appliance. Thankfully no one was seriously hurt but you never forget something like that. Please, please listen to these good people and get it checked by an expert.
