Man who is changing English gas over to French gas bottles for me told me to get Propane.

Gas bottles I already have are Butane and the shop won't swap for Propane.

Can I use Butane or is it better to go through the whole rigmarole of completing umpteen bits of paper for new Propane ones? Are the propane ones the very small ones?

many many years! since I was a kid
propane gasses at a lower temperature than butane. therefore if you use your van at temperatures approaching zero or below, you need to use propane if you want to use gas for heating or cooking etc

Changing between butane and propane or to a different cylinder like a french one is just a case of changing the pigtail pipe on vans built since 2004. 5 minutes work with just a nut at each end to undo and then retighten

I think I can just swap for Butane then as not going anywhere cold for a long, long time after this winter in France.

no reason why you cant continue using butane.....propane bottles are around the same size as butane but the fitting on the bottle is different.
