Delivered April 2021 šŸ˜ƒ. Still new, still learning. Only a couple of mishaps so far....
What is the general view on bottles/gas setup?

I will be swapping the mono regulator for a duel - it makes sense to.

It is our intention to travel Europe a bit when conditions allow so I am thinking of a 6kg Calor and then an 11kg refillable unit with various adapters.

Do I look at solid/steel bottles or the fibreglass opaque ones where you can see the level?

I have plenty of payload so that is not an issue.

Is there anything else out there I should be considering?

Views/opinions appreciated.

Regards

Mark

All the gear, and no idea!
Whilst youā€™re up at E&P at Doncaster you could take it just a little further up to Autogas2000 at Thirsk and have a 11kg (or 13kg if it will fit) Alugas refillable fitted, or you could have a 11kg Gaslow bottle fitted at Vanbitz whilst they do your Alarm/Tracker.šŸ‘

Thank you. Is there a potential issue going on ferries with an underslung tank?

Thank you. Not sure that a 13kg will fit but I will certainly check.

Thank you. From your comment - are you suggesting that an alugas is the better option (I am assuming for weight reasons) rather than a steel one?

Ferries aren't a problem for LPG tanks it's the tunnel that won't allow LPG cars. LPG tanks on mohos, either in a locker or underslung are fine in the tunnel but you'll have to show that the bottle valves have been closed. This not a problem if underslung are fitted to allow easyish access to the valve.

But no good if you venture beyond France as we normally do. French bottles can't be exchanged outside of France.

For extended touring the only viable options are refillables with an external filler. In some countries, such as Italy, you will not be allowed to refill if you open the bottle locker door.

if weight isnt a problem theres no advatage using alugas as once fitted your never handling the bottles no problems on tunnel with either refillables or underslung

I think it depends on your gas usage but I would go for your original idea but design it so it's easy to swap the calor to a second refillable if you find its worth it later.

Since 2008 & many years tugging
We have 2 x 14kg Alugas refillables.
If you have an external gas locker well worth going for the Alugas, had Stako on our first van in an external locker after a few years the paint was flaking off & the bottles rusting.

My last van set up- 1 Calor - 1 SuperU Teed together . 13Kg would last us over three week and we would always be back in France within any six week period.

To be honest I had Alugas fitted on my first van purely for weight reasons (it was 3500kg) and when I bought my new to me Adria Sonic I took it out and refitted it to my Sonic purely because I had it. I had one 11kg and one 14kg. I had to slightly modify the cupboard as the 14kg rubbed the top of the cupboard.
But as Landy Andy said, I prob would fit a pair of the biggest bottles that would go in the locker.

2 ā€œGas-Itā€ 11kg refillable bottles with an external fill point. Fitted myself and with 3 pan European adapters. Job done!
Served us well in over a dozen Countries so far. Best thing we did to the van. (apart from 2nd leasure battery and solar panels.)
Mitch.
Good luck.
