I have just purchased a garmin 780 camper satnav. I pootled thru the setup till I got to installing any outstanding updates. It says there are some and it will take 5 hrs to install them!!! It also says not to interrupt or stop installation as the device might be corrupted. Is this normal? I think it said there were 13 mb to install. I haven’t set it off as I
doubt the battery would last five hours

Don't know about the Garmin camper satnavs. But my Garmin cycle satnav did take more than an hour to update its mapping.

Well I don’t know how I’m supposed to do it then. I can’t plug it into my laptop as it shut’s itself off after about thirty seconds of inactivity. I can’t believe they sell something with five hours of outstanding updates!

It depends on internet speed, my Avtex tourer one ( Garmin 770) has had 14 hours shown before. I just plug it into a cigarette socket to power it and leave it to do it’s stuff

I’ve just updated my camper 770 from my lap top at home through Garmin express app it always says up to 4 hrs but usually takes about 1 depending on broadband speed.😊

What updates are there?
Firmware for the device or maps? Maps I assume as firmware is not a large download.
You can download the map separately and install to the device later. With Garmin’s Basecamp.
I’ve not done that for awhile so don’t have details to hand.

But simpler would be to temporarily disable your laptop’s power saving.

There are always updates as soon as you buy one. Mine always says 4 or 5 hours and manages it in about 30 minutes. It does depend on the speed of your internet. If your laptop goes to sleep, just wake it up again and the download/update will continue

As Garmin release map updates 3 \ 4 times a year that's why the pre-installed version is almost always out of date.

As said, update timeframe is usually well overestimated with our 760 and 780 both updating in around half an hour (each).

Given the increasing size of their map software you should install a micro sd card to the unit to ensure there is sufficient space to install the complete maps. A Camper 780 supports microSD memory cards from 4 to 256 Gb.

I’ll give it a go although on first use it was a waste of money. We are in a village in Cheshire and it directed us down what can only be described as a footpath with no passing places and a couple of right angle turns. Absolute nightmare as the banks were all brambles and scratched the van. If we had met anything one of us would have had to reverse. It was barely wide enough in places and the wheels were climbing the bank. It also told us to turn left at one point then said the roads ahead (which weren’t bad) hadn’t been navigated. Useless…

You have to use a bit of common sense with sat navs if you don’t like the look of a road don’t go down it the sat nav will re route and you won’t have a stressful drive😊

Just connected mine to the office high speed broadband router and the usb lead to a 3 pin plug adaptor. Took about an hour to update all, on first buying it.

Have you set it up with the dimensions of your vehicle?

Yes, and once or twice it said narrow road ahead and they weren’t bad. Then it sent us down the narrowest ‘road’ we have ever encountered. Only here for a night and will go home a different way….

A new navigator whatever the make having been on the shelf somewhere before being sold will likely have out of date map information so a potentially lengthy update could be necessary to ensure accurate maps which could take some time depending on your internet downloading speed .
In my last house my Garmin took a few hours to update but now only takes around 30 minutes.

Garmin, worst sat nav I ever bought! On first impressions I thought it was brilliant but find the mapping pretty awful. Good luck with updating.

Have you also got the routing setup to be fastest rather than shortest?
I use BaseCamp to preplan / load routes and you can setup various route criteria in there.

He we too are quite disappointed in its routing capabilities. You would have thought having put in all the correct dimensions of your motorhome it would safely direct you on wider roads . I am told that all it does is to say you could get down a specific road it doe not make any allowance for meeting anything coming the other way. We once met a 38 ton articulated lorry on a narrow country lane near Tenby , but fortunately we could pull into a field entrance to let the artic through. I now always have Waze running on my phone to act as an additional alternative.

Guess if the road you were on is deemed acceptable for a 38 tonner it would also be deemed acceptable for a motorhome?

Not saying that we've never been sent down narrow roads by our Garmin but the instances seem to be minimal, probably as a result of the road \ feature type avoidances we've got set-up, to it being the only route at all. Particularly in Cornwall, North \ West Scotland.

I always update ours through Garmin Express connected to laptop / pc and it takes around an hour to update both. Fibre connection though.

Garmin Express can offer more usability with their SatNav & Leisure GPSr devices.
With that utility a map update can be downloaded: -
A) direct to device
B) direct to device and computer
C) to computer only.

Option C is handy for me because I can use the Garmin Basecamp mapping app to put more map coverage on to an SD card on my old Nuvi SatNav (it has limited on board storage)

Can I ask where you got that upper size limit from please? My 780 is refusing to update its maps for the first time from Garmin Express, but giving me this error message which suggests that it can't cope with greater than 32Gb
