Garmin Map Updates (1 Viewer)

Hi just back from delivering/collecting RV's to and from Le Mans and whilst there my Garmin sat nav had problems as new roads have been built in last few years.

My question is how can I get the latest maps onto my Garmin760? Do I have to go through Garmin or is there another cheaper way??

Register your satnav on the garmin website and then they email you when updates are available. I had a problem with my garmin nuvi 250, it kept sticking, it has just been returned after repair from Garmin and they have included a note to say that unless you go on the website every few months and download the latest data that "sticking" is a common problem. I never knew that!

i wanted to update my garmin nuiu its about 2 years old before we went to spain ?
the garmin website asked for a £50 update fee . we declined

I have updated it twice in the past with no charge, I hadn't updated it since July last year though,although I have had emails saying "free downloads". Maybe some of the updates are free and some are charged for?

the free update are the operating system not the map update
