With my Garmin Nuvi getting long in the tooth I was given a Garmin Drivesmart 76 for Christmas. Apart from the larger screen and a more up to date system it has live traffic.
The on line user manual is rather involved mentioning lots of things I didn’t think I needed from a sat nav but the live traffic updates will be handy. It mentions a SIM card so do I need one for the traffic updates.
I had enough messing about trying to use my I Pad and apps as a sat nav. I would rather enjoy my travels than faffing with tech things.

Not for live traffic afaik…… I believe the data used is the same as the RDS used to update radio traffic info…..but I’ll investigate further! (y)

No, SIM not needed for live traffic!

update - sorry, I’m wrong….it’s the FM traffic that is ‘over the radio’ - live traffic needs to be connected to a mobile device with a SIM via Bluetooth - smartphone, tablet, etc.

I use the FM traffic data on my Drivesmart sat Navs in the ‘van and car, and have found that it warns me of delays and suggest alternative routes without recourse to pairing with my ‘phone. Give it a try to see if it works for you…..

Thanks Andy. I did think it being sold with Live Traffic seemed a bit of a con iff you need to have a SIM card or the internet to make it work.
Having had another look it says use it on a known route to prove its self. Rather than worrying about SIM cards that suits me better. We are planning to go for a run out to air off the festive food this week so I will see what happens.

We had a run out to try the new Garmin. The bigger screen and more up to date system and functions were a vast improvement. The search feature seems to have more categories than the older Garmin
The Traffic feature didn’t prove its self but after a few adjustments to activate some functions like speed camera warnings and adjust the volume. Being set on automatic I could only just hear it on a motorway, it is an older Transit.
