Hi
I am trying to plan a trip to Portugal from Calais using basecamp.

I have seen that I can ask it to plan a trip from A to B based either on No of days or No hours per day and that you can set it to plan with or without tolls.

We are considering using the route suggested here https://about-france.com/tourism/no-tolls-routes.htm that suggests
The tolls that are worth paying:
Calais to Abbeville on A16 : 8.20 Euros
South exit from Rouen on A 13 > A154 : 2.10 Euros
Motorway round Tours: 1.80 Euros ( 2 x 0.90 Euros) and maybe also as far as Poitiers (up to 9 Euros more)
The A63 - the tolled motorways south of Bordeaux avoiding the long built-up area around Bayonne and Biarritz. Cost 14.90 Euros (see A63)
Total recommended tolls (Jan 2022 ): about 28 Euros for a car, or about 40 €uros for a normal motorhome, RV or camping car.
Time saved by paying tolls: about 2 hours.

My question is the best way to go about planning this hybrid with/without tolls route.

Thanks
Paul

I prefer Mapsource, but Basecamp is similar.

I would select my start point using the 'new route' tool, then my finish point, then drag the route to suit myself... normally in conjunction with a decent (Michelin) map.

I do this most of the time rarely relying on the route the satnav creates.

Does this integrate directly to your Garmin unit once ‘designed’ and how easy is it to upload and modify on the Garmin unit please?

Once the route(s) have been created, connect the unit to your Laptop/computer using the lead supplied, using the 'send to unit' tab and send routes and waypoints.

It's reasonably easy to modify the routes on the Garmin unit, but as with this sort of stuff, practise is required.

I was lucky someone showed me many years ago how to use Mapsource, Youtube has some tutorials.

Has anyone got the optimal ‘Tonka’ or ‘About France’ minimal roll route saved that they can share as a Garmin uploadable file please?

Garmin units have the ability to avoid tolls, as does BaseCamp and Mapsource.

Just don’t do it on a Mac! I just can’t get my Mac to communicate with the Garmin 785🤷‍♂️🤷‍♂️

I’ve regularly updated both my Garmin 770 and 890 using my Imac and Garmin Express with no issues, is this what you’re referring to

I’ve updated the 785 via wireless, I was referring to creating a route on Basecamp on the Mac book then transferring it to the 785 it just doesn’t work, put it straight back on the old windows laptop and it does it straightaway🤷‍♂️
I haven’t got the patience for it now (I was at it days and buying new leads and adapters cos it’s the new usb C Pia sockets on the Mac) so now I just put a destination in and go🤷‍♂️😤😤

Found this series of videos, going to give them a watch.

I tried Basecamp a few years back using the tutorials. Went back to Mapsource, far easier to use.

Mapsource is dead. No security or bugfixes since version 6.16.3 / October 25, 2010
It is much better than Basecamp, imo too
But how to get it installed and working for a new user?

I agree.. I think it can be downloaded from Garmin's website... If not here's a way of getting it.
