fuel is not easy to find once past Aviemore

This was from the thread about traveling to Sango Sands campsite at Durness.

This is a bit of a misconception. Yes fuel stations are not as frequent as further down south but we do manage up here! :)

For example on the A9 north of Inverness you will find the following fuel stations on your route to Durness.

Tore roundabout (4th exit - 100 yds)
Dingwall, just off A9 - Tesco, 24 hour
Morrison's supermarket near Alness, 24 hour
Skiach Services near Invergordon, 24 hour - also a turn-off point for going to Durness
Ken's Garage, Kildary, 24 hour
Tain - Asda, 24 hour, Tesco, 24 hour, north of Tain by Lidl (not 24 hour)
If you are going to Durness this is a good turn-off point

This is just those on the A9 or nearby.

If you are continuing on the A9 north you will get fuel at:

Evelix by Dornoch, also has LPG
Brora
Helmsdale
Thrumster
Wick
Thurso

For a full list check this site:

Fuel is more expensive up in the Highlands along with extra p&p on many deliveries. However it's a small price to pay for living in such a wonderful location.

If you are planning on visiting the Isle of Lewis, there is a filling station 5 miles or so from Stornoway on the Tolsta road, in a village called Back !
Last year their prices were the same as supermarket prices in England !!
Apparently they buy it on the spot market whatever that is !!!!

Also, I think most up to date Sat Nav systems will locate fuel stops (y)

Cheers folks.

I used to have a vehicle that ran on petrol/LPG and filled up at Evelix. This was a 30 mile round trip and the vehicle was doing 8 to 10 miles per gallon (Land Rover 101)!

There used to be another LPG station between Evelix & Wick at a small independent fuel station but they closed a few years ago. The independent at Wick who sold LPG was put out of business by Tesco who opened a superstore with a fuel station. However Tesco did not sell LPG.

It was shortly after this that I sold the 101.

I have also seen some LPG websites that still list these 'closed' LPG sites so if you are running on LPG it is worth checking if the ones on your list are still open.

Fantastic information Keith.
We've never had a problem, but now that I've said that, no doubt we will this year! so I expect your list will prove invaluable.
Thank you! (y)

If you look on any map where the letters are s c o t l a n d is where we store fuel, in large dumps.
Do not tell the English.

Thanks Keith, we are going in May (y)
Going again this Monday :D I can do the NC500 on one tank if I try :).
P&O Hull Zeebrugge has got real silly on price so sod europe for now. Unfortunately I expect Scotland is full of French Dutch Germans Italians and Spanish enjoying the exchange rate

This topic does tickle me!!!

The bike shown on my profile picture has a fuel range of 130 miles (with the low fuel light coming on anytime around 100 miles).

I've toured around the west and north coasts on my Ducati on numerous occasions without fear of running out!

My motorhome has a range of just over 300 miles (and I suspect that most do better than this) so is just not a problem.

I have also been known to purchase fresh red meat (and vegetables) on my (motor home) travels to the far north - surprisingly, they are available!

I was more drawing attention to the fact I'm finally on holiday
Off course having such a massive payload I can carry full water fuel gas waste and booze :p

On the isle of Skye a few weeks ago the fuel was cheaper than anywhere on the mainland except asda.
Hows that work then?

We are staying at Strathclyde country park tomorrow night and public transport in to Glasgow Tuesday, wifey never been. Wednesday onward as yet unplanned?

Good info Keith, my other half Kathie is forever taking the Mick out of me because I get paranoid about fuel once I get past Glasgow :D2, I then spend a lot of time filling the van every time I get half empty, or half full whichever way you want to look at it!
