Currently parked up at a friends house in Polcenigo and she took us for a walk round the town. Wasn't expecting anything special but got it. Beautiful streets very old town stunning river and source of river. Watermills. Clean. Old have been in provence with cobbled streets.
We managed to pick up a map of the whole area from very helpful TO and some other gems were Gemona. Free aire with a free motorhome wash facility. Walk up to castle for superb panoramic views. Cobbled street town and gelato for a euro a scoop in the tub.
Venzone just north is a medieval town flattened in 76 by an earthquake which they have rebuilt. Lovely shops and history visit.
Laggi di fusine. Stunning lakeside free aire with superb walks round 2 crystal clear lakes with backdrop of snow capped dominant mountains. A top top place to go.
Aiello del fruilli just off the autostrada below Udine is a village with over 100 sundials. some are really amazing and there is a courtyard museum with 20 http://www.ilsoleeiltempo.it/zona1/03emi/1eng.htm
It is worth having a map and going on a sunny day. Parking by the cabanieri
Some places to avoid.
Travelling through the mountain passes was very very slow. I should have known better but havent done mountain for a couple of years. Cortina was particularly poor. The TO were unhelpful. "You can park at this expensive campsite or that extortionate one and there is no other parking in the whole region" no where to really park for a wander and don't believe searchforsites as you won't get your motorhome down there.
Udine aire is fill up for free and go sort of place. A bit isolated and locals about.
Trieste lidls has free parking for motorhomes on the south side.
