We gave a dometic fridge freezer in Burstner Ixeo. Am presently in Spain. Fridge will not convert to battery when away from EHU.No fuses gone assuming it’s 12 volt element. How is this possible to confirm?

Will only work on batteries when driving
Will only work on gas when stationary and not connected to EHU

Take the outside bottom cover off and check if the 12v supply has power, with ignition on. If not, maybe relay has failed?
Is it a new van? It’s not unknown for them to be supplied new without the 12v cable fitted - ask me how I know!

Comments above assume you realise 12v running operates with ignition on/engine running only and fridge is switched to 12v operation (unless automatic)?

Your fridge is designed only to operate on 12volt when the engine is running
If you are not connected to mains electricity switch it to gas

It only works on 12v while the engine (that’s the noisy thing at the front) is running.
If you’re not on ehu,you need to run the fridge on gas (that’s the stuff in the orange/red metal canister that goes flash bang wallop if you light it).
When lighting it on gas, allow time for the gas to come through. You might hear it clicking for a while before ignition. Light it on full/high setting, then turn it down to about half way after a few minutes.

Does this fridge/freezer have an 'Auto' setting? Are you saying that the fridge never works on 12V, even when the engine is running? Or is the problem that it works on 12V when the engine is running, but won't work on 12V when the engine is stopped?

Many motorhomes are wired so that it is not possible to run on 12V when the engine is stopped. Especially British motorhomes. Your Burstner may not be like that, and maybe you can do this.

It is meant to switch from electric to battery once electric discontinued. It does run on battery when engine on and we cannot have gas on.So travelling for along distance means no fridge,It does work on gas when we pull over and stop.Cant have gas on when on 24 hour ferry.

Me no understand.
So.....it runs when the engine is running.
It runs ok on gas.
So the only time you can’t have the fridge on is when on the ferry. Same would apply on tunnel.
I thought that was normal. Don’t open the door,it should stay cold for long enough.

If I understand you correctly it’s working as it should. Should only run on 12v when ignition on otherwise van battery would drain very quickly and you’d have a non-starter!

It gives out a warning beep when we disconnect from electric to say battery has not been accepted and the same as we drive.never had that before.it automatically went from electric to battery whilst driving,

Are you saying that the fridge tries to switch to 12V when the engine is running, but the cooling doesn't actually work, so the fridge warms up to room temperature as you are travelling along?

The fridge not working on 12V when the engine is NOT running is a very much a separate problem.

It sounds quite normal to me, except that you shouldn't think of it as 'running on battery'. When the engine is running the fridge is actually being powered by the engine's alternator (electrical generator), not the battery. Therefore when the engine isn't running it won't power the fridge unless your m/h is specifically designed to run on the battery when the engine is stopped. Some are but many aren't.

just to confuse the matter even more, do caravan fridges work on 12v without the engine running .......

If it's just on the ferry your worried about. Ours was fine with no gas or electricity. From Bilbao to Portsmouth
