Hi All,

We are going to french France later in the month and for a first time using the good offices of France Passion.

Having read the book and the 'destructions' sic. I believe it is de rigour to ring our potential hosts before arrival (just in case they're flup.)

The book gives the french Tel. No. Here comes the question.
I'm holding a UK mobile in my hand. I'm in France. Do I press any buttons BEFORE I press the Tel. No. of my hosts.
ie Do I have to go through the International Dialling code first or am I straight in.

Thanks in advance

Just dial the number, no need for the 0033... When we use France Passion we've not rang in advance but have always gone to find the owners when we first arrived before setting up.

If it is your first time then enjoy, it will be an experience, very enjoyable, and you'll need the night to sober up for the next day.

Our last visit in April was a Chateau near St Emillion, the couple were in their late 80s, she was deaf and both had a real sense of humour...

From my experience you have to treat the call as an international one

So if the local number you have in France is 01234. 567890 then you would dial

00 33 1234 567890

Thanks Moulin,

But aren't you already in France?, with a French Mobile?. That's not the case with us.
We're in France with a UK Mobile.

This one sunk me, trying to get the french number needed 033 then the number, ringing UK needs 044 the the number less the 0 std code. Differing companies have different requirements, BE SURE ring the company number and ask what the requirement actually is BEFORE you go. 100 or 150 to get customer services.

We're in France with a UK Mobile.

But when I'm in the UK with a French mobile I don't use the 0044...But if you try one way and it doesn't work then try the other...

Many years
We travel very regularly several times a year in many other countries.

Whenever we use our (Spanish SIM) mobile phones in any other European country, we just dial the in-country version of the number we are after, ie we do not add on the international dialling code in front of that number.

This is I think because the phone is already roaming, and is thus connected to an airtime operator in that other country.....so that operators system knows I'm already in (for example) France, so I don't need to add on any international code when I dial a French number.

So once you are in France and your UK SIM mobile is connected to a French airtime provider, I don't think you nowadays need to add the country code before dialling a French phone number.

Last year we used our three mobiles

we found that some French numbers worked without +33 and some didn't
some numbers needed the 0 taking out some didn't (+33 023 or +3323 you know what I mean)

We found trial and error helped a lot

Our first France Passion book arrived this morning, so I'm no expert, but I'm pretty sure it says the opposite, i.e. don't ring in advance (unless the listing specifically asks for it). Checking again, it's actually 'Golden Rule No. 1".

All the mobiles I have used seem quite happy with the international number. All my numbers in the memory (if UK) are set up with the +44 prefix and work fine.

All (most) of my contact numbers (on my mobile) are prefixed with "+", replacing the leading "0"
As I understand it, mobile phones are (generally) smart enough to translate the "+" to the required international prefix code for the country you're currently in (some countries use 0, some 00?)
Works all the time. Except when it didn't! For some reason, a relative's mobile phone (an Italian / Rome number) wouldn't work with "+", but did with a leading 0. The phone in question happened to be a very old, very cheap mobile, and this was > 5 years ago.

No one can phone me with a UK mobile without dialing 0033 first then dropping first 0
So if the number is 05 61 55 43 48
Then you go 00335614348
Always been French , been very often called by UK mobiles

So, (Hate that in modern speech)
To sum up. I go to France, In using the mobile, try it without the international code. If that doesn't work, then put the Int. Code upfront remembering to omit the first zero in the number proper. If that doesn't work, SHOUT!!!

Switch it on first helps...(y)

This time of the year I'm not sure there is any need to ring in advance...unless you have specific question.. ie You are likely to arrive after their normal cut-off time etc.
