Hi all
We are in Bordeaux at present. Just wondering if the area north of the western Pyrenees, Tarbes, Pau etc are worth touring and any good places to see or stop at, Other option Montauban area but do not have much info on it. Any ideas
Thanks
Tk

Lourdes is well worth a visit including the candle lit parade every night.

There’s a nice Aire at Sauveterre-de-Béarn, overlooking the tennis courts. Sauveterre-de-Béarn is a very attractive medieval village. The scenery as you approach the Pyrenees is beautiful. We drove right to the top last week and it was well worth it.

Anywhere in the Pyrenees beats Montauban hands-down for scenery. It's the sort of town one drives past to get somewhere interesting, IMHO.... :)

Pau is a pleasant city to visit. Tarbes is OK but less interesting. Montauban not interesting at all (imho).

As others have said, miss Montauban, Lourdes is worth a visit. Yes, the shops are tacky ( more plastic Marys than you can shake a stick at) but the church, grotto, square are all worth visiting.
My favourite town was Foix but that’s further south. If you decide to drive further you can go on the cable car up the Pic du Midi. Lots of open parking near the cable car station. The observatory and the exhibition on the history and the building of the observatory are interesting.

If you are in to cycling then there are some amazing cols to cycle up and amazing scenery.

Some great walking area as well.

LOL ! Same here: Montauban isn't interesting IMO so will stick to the other opinions on here!
Here a video I quite often post but sooooo many newbies every single day, it's worth another go! It goes through all the main interesting places!

Pau is well worth a visit, a beautiful town. Some amazing scenery around and in the Pyrenees.
Petit train d'artouste is worth a visit if the weather is good, highest train in Europe, Cirque de Gavanie, ( a beautiful walk) Pic du Midi. La Rhune, small train to the top, fantastic views. Most of the small towns in the foothills of the Pyrenees are interesting.
Good luck, Pyrenees is a beautiful place. We had the first snow fall yesterday above 2000m looking very nice.

Mirepoix and Foix are very beautiful and History has left a few prints , Cordes-sur-Ciel is an amazing place to see how things were done/made in the old times ( bobandjanie remember when we went there together?)
I can't forget Cirque de Gavarnie , we went there for son Yannick's 1y birthday

I just loved Cordes! We are so grateful to Frankie for taking us there. I have been searching for another place as nice ever since. It was just so Medieval and so 'there', if you go you will know what I mean!
If you go to Gavarnie, be prepared with supportive shoes or boots and take drinks and snacks (or lunch) with you as a good walk with lots to see, much more enjoyable if you know it is quite a way and are not thirsty, there was no Frankie guiding us on that excursion or we would have been better prepared ? Enjoy! Janie & Bob

tkk , you’ve got too much to choose from now :)
The Pyrenees is the most stunning area, I was lucky to live there for a while. I’d forgotten about the caves ( you have to pre book) There is also a “prehistoric park” nearby.
Just driving through the scenery can be enough. There is an Aire which I can only remember as “ the blue pool” Perhaps someone else knows it ?

Another vote for mirepoix. Stunning little town. There are some great thermal springs up there on the road down from mont louis towards perpignan following the yellow train. They make rock pools so you can bathe in them and its like a hippy commune. Half the people are naked and smoking pot and going off into the woods and the other half are just in shock. I can find co ordinates if intrigued. Definitely different

Can someone recommend an Aire or site at Pau please. I went through last year and could only see car parks, no dedicated motorhome parking. As the traffic was very busy I didn’t investigate.

Mountains + France and first in my mind is Chamonix. The Aiguile du Midi is a must see.

And then the silly old fool realises the Pyrenees are not the Alps.

OMG, this thread reminds me HOW MUCH WE LOVE THE PYRENEES :h::h::h:

Thanks all,
No contest, Pyrenees below Lourdes its got to be!

Nice aire at Payolle near the Lac de Payolle. Beautiful scenery and fantastic views of Pic du midi de Bigore. Nice drive from there over the Col d’Aspin.
We tend to stay away from big towns and cities.

Up the cable car? Up the CABLE CAR?? we walked to the top! :ROFLMAO:

Why do that after they went to the trouble of building you a cable car ? Talk about ingratitude.

Do you haul your boat out of the water, drag it up the hill, drop boat back in the water. No you'd use a lock.
