Oh dear, nowts ever free, following the recent Gillet Jaune protests and the "free tolls" the companies are coming to get you. Rarely use peages personally, I find them too expensive and prefer to pootle along. On average we find using N roads saves us in the region of 20euros per driving hour, but we are lucky, we are not in a rush.

You must drive very slowly:) We do use tolls as our time is short so getting somewhere quick (especially out of northern France) is our preference and sometimes those N roads and endless stop start, chicanes, traffic lights etc. do get on your nerves. However we go Class 2 and it works out about 10p a mile ish so at 60 mph that's about 5-6 quid, which can be saved on fuel etc. as you can continuously move. We do use N roads as well if we see it is a good one without too many towns en-route but with the new 50mph limit on roads it can be a bit slower nowadays with average speed well below 40mph.

I suppose all les gilets jaunes and brown tape / black bags, will be removed from the speed cameras now too!
Pity, it was nice to see them all wrapped up in the cold.....

Quite right no different to looting in my opinion.

Rarely use toll roads. As a rough guide using the toll from Boulonge to Abberville is around 50 miles at cost of approximately 12 euros for class 2. That's the cost of 2galls of fuel. So at 25 to 30mpg it is relatively doubling the cost of fuel you use. Hope I've got the maths correct.

I travel flat out which is why I don't use them as 50mph is just the same on the N roads so why pay to use a toll road ? No difference to me in economy ,I certainly wouldn't recoup the toll charge in fuel savings. + the fuel cost , not that I'd ever be buying any is ridiculous on the toll roads. +The service areas are far too busy & lit up to get any sleep.

@MichaelT going to have to get 'er inddors to check my calcs before I post but our to Zaragoza with tolls 6h04 579kms =109e total with 41e in tolls or 8h29 589kms =68e total no tolls saving 41e taking 2h25 mins longer. Not far off my original but I fully understand the "need for speed" for those of us who must still tend the grindstone

Not 20e per hour driving but nearly 20e per hour extra driving time

OH Dear
Will not affect any of us here in the UK even if you used the Autoroutes the toll bills are going to French users only

But those French who use a tag will have already paid anyway and won't be billed as Sanef will already have their registrations

Hourly costs are irrelevant those of us who use the Autoroute do it for SPEED of getting from A to B but a lot of miles are done off Autoroute too getting to aires and the sea side

For me it’s not the cost of tolls, it’s the convenience of no roundabouts, speed bumps in every village and all of the traffic slowing obstacles en route.
Equals less stress and comfortable drive. Everyone to their own?

I really enjoy N and D roads,,,especially now they have dropped the speed limit nationally..Steady 48 mph is fast enough for me. At that speed i can enjoy the scenery and end the day feeling fresh..BUSBY.

@busby must be an "old fart" thing ... used to dash around like a loony, trucking doing up to 15 hours per day, but now, sloooowly does it, 'er indoors frequently asks me if we've joined a funeral convoy when I forget misen and bimble along .... still take wrong turns and get lost but these days, it's just another adventure

Ah but would y

Ah but I wonder if you would say that if towing a car trailer total length of rig 12m with hundreds of those dam sleeping policemen and roundabouts ahead of you?:xThumb:

The two cats like me to bimble along at a steady 90 kph on whatever class of road allows that. Regular changes of speed to 50 and 30 kph, speed bumps, and roundabouts soon result in howls of protest from the back. Owt for a quiet life.

You'd be just as fresh if you used the Autoroute - you could drive the equivalent mileage & finish two hours earlier :xsmile:.

I wondered if that would happen. Talking to a guy the other day who was so happy about coming through France on the toll roads and said he took his ticket when he joined the toll and handed his ticket back to the yellow vests at the other end and just drove through. I said about the cameras getting his reg plate and tracking him like a speeding ticket to get there money. He did not seem concerned. But I bet he will when he gets the bill.

And see nothing,,,On the N and D roads we see lovely towns and villages..We can finish at any time of the day we fancy. If we come across somewhere interesting and can park for the night then thats it. Only plan a rough destination but never an arrival date and regulary never get there .BUSBY.

Yep. Maximum working day for a trucker is 13 hours per day extended to 15 hours per day three times per week. Daily driving, wheels turning 9 hours per day extended to 10 hours three times per week. Maximum working hours in any one week 85 hours. Easy work dragging a 44 tonner around isn't it, thank god it's over for me ... but .. paid me very well and enjoyed maybe 99% of the time. The 1% I didn't enjoy was normally whilst in the yard.

Hi.
Yes. It was when i was at it,if you were to get into the nitty gritty of what you can and cannot do,you could pass "A" level maths.:xrofl::xrofl:. There were ways of abusing the Tacho card:xwink:,someone said. "You cannot expect all drivers to spend nights away in their vehicles and not think about how the Tacho works....... " They were not wrong,as for todays "electronic gismo's",now i would bet good money...............
Tea Bag

@Tea Bag It's an absolute nightmare the rules and regs, or at least was when I had to consider them. There were, and still are, ways around the tacho discs in their day and the digi cards of today should one choose to. Similar with the speed limiters on trucks, all that man can design he can can circumvent should he choose. Whilst trucking here in France for French company I was frequently on "night out" and dined and talked with truckers from all over Europe in the routiers. Certain transporters of cut flowers told me the carried large sums of cash from their employer with which to pay the on the spot fines for exceeding driving/working hours. Even within Europe, the French system can only fine drivers from other European states and cannot effect their driving licences regards points.

My spanish neighbour said the fines in the UK were 'as cheap as chips' compared to the same offence here.

We have always avoided tolls except where they are much more convenient like crossing the border into Spain.
However on our last long trip we started to use sections of Peage to take us round towns rather than going through and to get round 'mickey mouse' sections with numerous roundabouts. For a few extra Euros it seemed well worth it for the ease and convenience.
Once we got home I applied for a toll tag and used it for the first time last week on a short trip to France.
Going south on the A16, instead of turning off at Boulogne and going down the hill and joining the local traffic, we just stayed on the motorway until the next junction. Approached the Peage, there was a bleep and up goes the barrier. Brilliant! No stopping, no reaching out for a ticket or faffing with a credit card.
One gets to a stage in life when you just want to take things easy and to hell with a few quid. The toll tag is just one more way of making things easier. :xThumb:

I like toll roads, 'cos I is the only one on them. :xrofl:

And you can use the lane marked 30KPH in these lanes you reduce your speed to 30kph for the toll and never stop. Used them when trucking and they really do save time and of course money and wear and tear of the vehicle.

Here we go again, Toll roads V Non toll roads. At the end of the day it's down to personal preferences.
Some simple facts. Cost of toll for class 2 motorhome from Calais to Irun return= 291.80

The N10 route is mostly duel carrageway/non toll motorway, so not restricted to 80KPH and free from HGV traffic on a sunday.
