Since July 2013 but been camping for 25+ years
We've stayed a couple of times now here : http://www.lapergola.com on the shore of Lac du Chalain, which is in the Jura region of France. Nice restaurant, snack bar, swimming pool and of course the lake. Walking distance to a couple of small towns. Supermarket is a bit more of a drive/cycle.

I'm surprised that no one's mentions Lake Verdon yet.
Lots of campsites and aires, all busy in August but worth the effort, stunning drive too (y)

Aug 09 to date 9,000 miles!
The river is the Verdon, hence the whole area is the Gorge de (du?) Verdon.

Stunning scenery - however it is naturally quite precipitous in places so many of the lakeside venues for camping in the whole area are also very hilly, camping arranged on terraces cut out of the hill, sort of thing.

Make sure if you like the look of a campsite before booking or just going there on spec to check out the reviews - use the UK Campsites website for this (they have sections for all the popular countries) or Tripadviser. Most people tell it like it really is on both sites. Very useful info. usually.

Yes, of course it is - I'd completely forgotten that
We stayed at Broken Link Removed not particularly by choice, just that most other sites/aires were full.
It turned out to be a good decision.
Facilities aren't great and it's VERY hard work carrying the kayak uphill but the views over the lake are stunning and it's reasonably priced compared to the other local sites (22euros pn, August, family of four).
There's also an aire outside the gates, closer to the lake but without the views... only 10euros pn.
