Having a wonderful time here skiing in the alps.
George got bitten by something which flared up in to a raging infection..
Took him to the Drs and qued up behind all the skiing injuries to be seen. ..

Dr was very concerned and gave prescription for some anti Biotics and a bill for 45e..
Trip to the chemist and the bill for the AB WAS 99e plus the Dr wants to see him again... another 45e.... total bill 189e for pills that cost 10p wow. .

I know we can claim it back but either get 60% OF it or claim on insurance and face the excess. ..grrr

On a plus note he was back skiing today...

Rant over....

Paul :Eeek: maybe you went to the wrong Doctor:Doh:.....queuing at a ski based Doctor.... most doctors charge 23 €....unless you have gone to a Hospital....and even then 45€ is on the high side
The reason I say this...the wife had an appointment with the surgeon that removed her Kidney about a month ago....that was ......46 euros....
most of my appointments with my specialist/surgeon that did my replacement hip...his charges are 28 euros for just over 30 mins..these are top men in there field..you must have gone to a very rich Doctor:RollEyes::winky::winky::Doh:and could see you have deep pockets filled with Euros:cry:

Had a similar problem in France last year, rang NHS to claim and was told that if it was a private doctor you cannot reclaim the costs.

We took a friend and his partner to docs here at PV. Sent off to hospital at St junien where it
turned out to be shortage of oxygen in the blood. Oxygen was adminstered and lots of tests done. Duly released back to PV that same day. With test results on her hand!

Charges? Nuffin!!! :thumb:

What price health eh?

"George got bitten by something which flared up in to a raging infection.."

Mrs got cellulitis a few years ago (apparently often caused by insect bites) and ended uo spending ten days in hospital on IV AB drip and was seriously poorly because of it.

Mel is right Paul! You should have paid 23 euros , unless it is on week ends (saturday afternoon to monday morning)

But 45 euros is a specialist bill.

You've been misled I guess.

You should have this written on the door "Médecin généraliste" . If you see this on his door then you've been ripped off, and I wonder how he 's going to justify this amount. BTW did you pay him in cash?

Grrrrrrr

Would think 23 Euros is right, when I lived in France some years ago it was 20 Euros. Are medication prices not written on the boxes over there any more??

Ok Firstly Thanks for the replies...

And yes George is now fine thanks ..... had great skiing Rory and snow is crud in the pm but just about holding good. .nice resort though. ..

Ok so e111 card is no longer. .is now the ehic. You still pay and you claim it back. That's the way it works for us uk citizens

The cost...I have no idea why it cost so much only that it did I am in a ski resort fgs... my son has what looks like either cellulitis or possibly a blood clot... as a nurse I know the signs and I know he needs a dr. I am sent to the Dr in the resort by the site the same Dr that has a que of people out the door. . Can you French experts tell me exactly what you are meant to do? I'm not sure what the Dr's had on the door Frankie there's two Dr's in the building and it's a ski resort...

Perhaps a Google search will show it. .

I'm just glad that we have insurance and it was not worse

Ps we paid by card

Good thing you paid by Card as now I am sure he is a specialist . Wherever you are Paul the price is set by law. Being in a resort doesn't change a thing. So if you have internet , enter Google "médecins généralistes à xxxxxx" and the town you're in where I put crosses.

You should have the list and the addresses and phone numbers of all the "right" doctors.

Now if you're told to phone a number starting by 0899 xx xx xx , change site, it's a rip off site! And look for one where you can read in the link "pagejaunes". This one will give you the phone number gratis.

Usually the specialists have to write on their doors what they are specialised in , otherwise we would not know either.

I'm sorry you had to learn this that way ....

I hope you'll enjoy the rest of your stay!!:thumb:

Ok Frankie. ..Thanks... so this is how the rip off occurred. .
On the door there was the sign medicine generalist... and the names of 3 Dr's.

We have checked the receipt and it clearly says medicine generalist on the receipt. .. however this is crossed out and the name of the other Dr is placed below with medicine specialist. .

How on earth are you meant to know? It's like turning up at a gp seeing a locum and then getting a large bill as you see the consultant brain surgeon about your headache.

Complete rip off and we will now not get the money back for the treatment. .

Disgusting rip off of the 2o + year French traveller...

I'm going back up there in s mo to show my disgust. ..

And you Dave. .. they have a duty to test the elderly for free:winky:

Do so yes!!

I wish I was there, they would hear my voice, as it is clearly forbidden to hide this sort of indication/not indicate it BEFORE your visit!

Keep it all, and take pics of the receipt and all the indications given outside!
I will look for any way to claim or get the doctor to give you your money back ... well if you want me to of course! This is really disgusting I do agree! There's no way you could know it if they didn't write it so you could see it BEFORE you got in!

If you manage to say clearly "Je vais me plaindre à l'ORDRE des Médecins !" (get Google translation to pronounce it for you) you might get your money back!

There are black sheep everywhere! Yukk

Right : Just had the "ordre des médecins" on the phone , which is the group which rules all the doctors in France. There is one group for each region but had confirmation that

1) The price is set by law for all the "généralistes" at 23 euros

2) Specialist has to be written outside (by outside is meant at least in the street or Inside BEFORE you get into the doctor's cabinet)

So keep a copy of all évidences , write down the name of the doctor and what he is specialised in.

Name the town and resort so I can contact the local "ordre des médecins". If you don't do it for you Paul, please think about the next foreigner or even the poor lad living in the area as the dustbin man and who might get caught ! This is just not normal and the lady on the phone agreed with me, and told me to try to have as many détails as I can so the local group can tell him off. I will have to check first in which category he is classified to see if he is allowed to ask a free price. But in any case even so, it should have written "specialist" somewhere!

BTW , has this doctor done something on your son like injection?

Perhaps the word is ' working ' and paying NI so entitled.

When we moved to France 10 years ago we were 55 years old so not of official retirement age so had to pay 8% of our income to entitle us to health care . Similar to paying NI. Did I consider this a rip off , no. This is the same entitlement as a French person andi chose to live there .

You are only entitled to the same rights as the citizens of country you live in or holiday within Europe . 70% of your healthcare in France ( you take out an insurance for the rest ) . So perhaps the fault lies with the UK government giving 100% free. Btw in Spain it is 100% so if you worry about health bills while on holiday it may be the place to go.

Ok
So I went back to the Dr's to query the bill and get an explanation. .

The Dr is not a specialty Dr and we have not been overcharged.

She was a generalist as Frankie was explaining. .

However she had given the bill with some words after it.

They basicly say or mean she can charge what she likes.

So 23e was the bill the rest was made up of a check of bp and temperature. and feeling his groin. Something I would of expected any way

Still he is fine.

The cost a joke expecially the price of pills.

But

At least I know I can claim of it back. .
