We came over to France on Sunday. In the run-up to travel I’d been keeping an eye on prices on www.prix-carburants.gouv.fr, and been happy to see prices down as low as €1.78. When we got here though, lowest we could see was €1.96.

We knew a further government subsidy was kicking in from 1 Sept, and sure enough today the website is showing prices as low as €1.64, which is great. But why did the prices go up so much over the last week or so? It’s almost as though there was a hiatus when the previous government subsidy lapsed?
(And guess who had to buy some diesel yesterday?!)

It’s like the Sofa sales on tv.
They have to put the price up to then say they’ve reduced it back down to the normal selling price but everyone thinks it’s a sale or government incentive price 🤣

Filled up yesterday at €1.825 at the Auchan Dunkirk, another Funster reported €1.90 in Luxembourg, cheaper in France got to be a first.

I thought the 30 C off was just an extention for Sept, Oct as it was due to end Aug.

That was my initial thought - but the way ALL the prices went up suddenly, you’d normally have expected one of the big supermarket chains to do a promotion to gain an advantage.

Went passed a Total garage in Bourges today €159.9 might call in tomorrow if there's not many waiting. 😜

We paid €1.729 at a Super U in Wormhout this afternoon.

As Lenny said, Luxembourg is currently €1.90.

Unfortunately we are heading for Germany, where prices are over €2 per litre.

Paid 1.705 for diesel on the autoroute near Poitiers today

Saw 1.60 today at a total garage but sold out.
Total garages are definitely passing the reductions on as we have seen all of them (4) in the 1.60s but supermarkets about 1.75 cheapest. (Brittany)

We shall be heading from Poland across Germany to France in a couple of weeks. We shall fill up leaving Poland currently £1.45/lt and hope to get across most of Germany to France on one tank. Maybe we should take a 25lt spare also.

We saw it for €1.76 at a small independent just before Andres on the D943 on Friday afternoon, traffic queuing back onto the main drag.

Tried filling up with diesel this morning in France, close to the German border around Colmar. Visited three places and all sold out of diesel. If it were available, it would have been around 1.75 euros per litre. Was travelling into Germany and so had to buy on arrival in Germany at 2.20 a litre. Lots of German registered cars queuing in French fuel stations close to the border. I wonder why? That’s probably why some places in France have run out.

Best advice may be to fill up in France, well away from the German border.

As posted elsewhere, we filled up with the cheapest Diesel for 5 months...1.51€
Lugo, Galicia...hope it mixes well with the more expensive stuff I had in the tank...

(y) Forgot to say....this price has a Government discount which is scheduled to end in a couple of weeks...but most likely will be extended....

Off to Denmark next week, so wanted to see what the diesel prices where like en-route & came across references to this. It seems the French govt wants the fuel companies to provide the discount direct as an alternative to being further taxed on their profits. amazing what they can come up with if they want!

TotalEnergies website announcement:

Paris, 22 July, 2022 – To meet the expectations of French people affected by the increase in energy prices and the impact on their purchasing power, the Company is initiating a large-scale fuel price reduction programme for all of its service stations in France, effective until year-end.

From September 1 to November 1, TotalEnergies will lower its petroleum fuel prices sold in service stations by €0.20/litre compared to global market quotation prices, followed by a €0.10/litre reduction from November 1 to 31 December.

“This commitment by TotalEnergies supplements the French government’s measures to provide direct support to French people’s purchasing power. Consumers are therefore our top priority since we prefer to make an immediate and direct contribution to our customers, rather than an indirect tax which would penalise our refineries. Indeed, our refineries in France form industrial infrastructure that contributes to the country’s energy security, directly employing nearly 5,000 staff, and receiving our investment of several hundred million euros to guarantee both their modernisation – in the case of Donges – and their transformation – as with Grandpuits. These refineries faced losses of more than €1 billion during Covid in 2020 and 2021, for which TotalEnergies did not request any government support and which are more than offset by the current favourable environment”, commented Patrick Pouyanné, Chairman and CEO of TotalEnergies. “With this large-scale price reduction programme in our service stations, we are hopeful that this long-term commitment will be recognised both by our customers and at the national level.”

These price reductions, which complement the government’s own measures, will apply from the first litre purchased, with no limit on amounts, for all petroleum fuel sold in service stations.

I passed a "Plenoil" service station this morning in Puerto Lumbreras.** diesel at 1,69€ less discount = 1,49€ . Turned around & went back & topped up* App here shows nearest station to you. https://plenoil.es/app-plenoil/

* how on earth the Repsol station up the road can justify 1,96€ before discount I've no idea especially as they have just taken over & refurbished the 2 x old service stations each way to Águilas & are selling both normal & super diesel at 1,86€?

** 95 unleaded was 1,45€ after discount

Murcia today was stating Friday the gov.es are pleased with how prices are lowest in europe& so are proposing an additional 10c discount & extending it until the end of 2023

Brilliant news Richard.. it's amazing how we have adjusted to the these greatly increased prices...and are delighted when the prices fall to a near normal price.....I expected less Spanish motorhome holiday makers this summer in Galicia...but no, they were here as normal...less now as we progress through September....

L'Eclerc in Audierne is currently €1.67, a local independent garage, about 200 yards up the road from L'Eclerc was €1.60 last week but sold out, here's hoping they get a delivery this week so I can fill up before our journey home on Thursday

Paid 1.70 yesterday on motorway just before the Belgian border saw some in Dieppe yesterday at 1.58 but there was a queue for it.

Seen a few at €1.58, but the queues were going out onto the main road. However a couple of days ago, we was passing one with only a couple of cars lining up in each lane, so managed to fill up at €1.58. This was between La Rochelle and Rochefort

Be aware many total garages are running out of fuel.
We have only passed 3 that were open and 5 or 6 that were empty.
