Sorry if this has been covered recently, we are going to Lake Como on 24th July (Son and his family are moving there, we're taking some of their stuff)

I thought a stop on the way at Colmar would be ideal but it looks like the sites are not taking bookings yet.

Does anyone know the situation regarding French campsites and aires?

When we went to lake como we went through Switzerland and stopped on the aire at como. Nice commercial aire with electric.

There is a Air at the marina in colmar.

Nice place to stop.

Aires never closed, campsites seem nearly all to be open. Worth calling if you have a particular site in mind.

Thanks all, the three campsites I tried in the Colmar area won't allow bookings on their websites, I've emailed, so we'll see if they reply.

So, the opinion is that the aires are open, excellent, we'll give it a go.

A couple of alternatives - an ACSI site in Belfort an old military town, aire or wildcamp in Breisach am Rhine, another nice historic town on the banks of the river.

Camping Le Médiéval at Turckheim, just outside Colmar, are taking bookings, we’re booked for two nights from next Wednesday.

Can recommend Camping Pierre de Coubertin in Ribeauville

Stayed there many times, nice site and super convenient to walk into the town

Also it's open(y)

There is a free aire at Belfort, just outside the city walls, free electric, water and dump, limited to 10 vans in specific bays but are close together. The car park is massive and probably OK to overnight on. Entrance is through an open gateway and the carpark has a wall around so no general access to just anyone from the sides.
Belfort itself is a walled citidal town and there is a good museum at the top of the town with views all over. Very worthwhile visiting. Steeped in history.

Thanks again, I'll have a look, we were in Alsace at the end of last year, so know one or two of the places mentioned, Riquwehr is also a beautiful village with a car park / aire next to the village entrance.

How did you book Turckheim? When I try and put in the arrival date it comes up Na/N/Na/N/Na
and won't let me get any further.

Have you got Google translating the page? Seems to screw up their date thing.

Every aire we have seen for the past nearly fortnight has been open and not full.

The only provisonto that is we havent seen a gb van either.

We decided to stay on campsites not knowing the general feeling towards us cv infested brits but we will be moving onto them if as or when boris gives the go ahead for air bridges.

Hope that helps

Re: Lake Como. From Switzerland if you go through the San Gotthard tunnel or pass (take the pass, it's brilliant) and want to get to L. Como, you'd be OK to go through Logano town, and along the north side of the lake Lugano, through the tunnel towards the north end of Como. Just above lake Piano is a free aires with a fantastic view of Lake Lugano and the Lake Piano, but be careful not to follow the sat nav too closely. It led me into a very small village and I got stuck solid between 2 houses. Instead there are 2 very nice camp sites, one of which is an ASCI site fronting Lake Piano. From then towards Lake Como the road is OK width-wise. But at L. Como, you have a choice of: 1. Iffy looking ferry across L. Como, or 2. turn left to the north tip of L.Como (didn't do it), or 3. turn right along the north side of Como. Take care!! when I did it, there were many oversize trucks coming the other way!! Heart stopping!! The map says it's a 2 carriage road but it is only 1 and a half through the lakeside towns. But it is GORGEOUS. ENJOY!

Yes, I had the translate on, I'll try again with it off.

Thanks for all the other helpful comments, much appreciated.

We stayed at Camping Vauban at Neuf Brisach. Worth checking out.

We stopped off at Colmar last year enroute to Lake Garda.
We stayed at the marina aire.
Try get there early as it can fill up.
We opted to stay in the field away from the marina front.
When you drive in, drive to the far end of the marina and you will see the bourne sign.
You pay the guy in charge of the marina who is in the office far right.
There’s a supermarket opposite, but you’d be better going to the bigger supermarket with petrol station just down the road.
It took us approx 20mins slow walking pace into the centre which was beautiful.
There’s a video of the approach to Colmar on my YouTube channel

Have you tried telephoning the sites for which you wish to book? We tried (unsuccessfully) to book space on-line and also sent emails which went unresponded. But telephoning brought results even with our Franglais.
Just back from 4 days at Camping du Lac, Montigny.

We were the only GB registered van on the site which filled from Wednesday. No one even commented, including our neighbours with whom we chatted daily. We encountered no hostility whatsoever. Start enjoying French sites again.

We are using aires at the moment, all seem to be open, the one at Lac Du Der that usually charges for overnight is currently free. The locals are all fine with us being here but we are keeping to ourselves quite a lot.
we also haven’t seen another GB van but we did hear some English speakers on one aire and in another car park.

When we went to Lake Como about 4 years ago we did a bit of a country ✅ off. We went through France to Germany above Lake Constance (bodensee) then did Austria, Lichtenstein and Switzerland, up over the Slplugen Pass into Italy and just above Lake Como. We stopped at the commercial aire at Colico on the edge of the lake. We didn’t use motorways in Switzerland so didn’t need a vignette.

When we came back from Portugal in late March quite a few aires in France were closed, taped off and had notice displayed informing you that items closed.

If it's only a overnight stop you are looking for you can always 'pop - over' to Germany and use their Stellplatze. Also, Camping - Car Parks have a number of gated car parks around Colmar, no need to book and around 14 euros a night.
