Hi Funsters,

Have just had satellite fitted for Avtex TV with built in freeview. I was wondering if I could put another box on as well to get Freesat? maybe something like a Huimax for the flexibility of recording as well. Any ideas please and if it is possible how do I wire it all up??

Thanks

If your Avtex has a satellite receiver built in you’ll get Freesat as well.(y)(y)

"Oh no it don't ". :D

Avtex are NOT Freesat but "free to air".
Technical point I know but there is a difference.

Yes will get the channels but not the on screen dedicated menu.

simple answer is ---- if your avtex does not have built in sat receiver there is nothing stopping you using an external sat receiver, like the one you mention, a humax receiver. you can get these with built in hard drive to enable recording..
However if your sat dish only has one LNB you will not be able to watch one channel while recording another (But note: your avtex will also have a USB recording facility)

You can watch and record if the channels use the same Mux. I don't understand it but it works.

You’ll need twin LMB and cables......

I’ve got one of these but upgraded to 1 terabyte as when I’m at home I record lots of films and other crap on my home Freesat in case I don’t get a signal while away on the satellite.... I think I have about 100hrs on it and I think it only has used 10-15gig....

Be very sure that this refurbished unit will look brand new in every way and fully guaranteed....(y)

We've got a humax recorder with twin lnb, it is great as it also has iplayer etc on it, so saves faffing around if we want to stream anything (been very windy here in France the last few days)

I ve connected my oyster digital system to the AV port on the Avtex bypassing their built in tuner so I can choose to use astra 1 when out of range of 2.

Freesat
Freeview
Free to Air
Free to View

All used interchangeably but all have subtly different meanings.

My Avtex is dual freesat/freeview but does not receive CH5 but when I run dome into sky + box I get ch 5

The Avtex Pro we bought last year has freesat.

Depends which avtex you have.
The original ones will record the channel its set to onto a memory stick.
Theres a usb point on the tv.
If you have an avtex pro, you can record on one source/channel and watch another, again, recording onto a memory stick.

Thanks to everyone fo their answers as always really helpful Funsters.
Now I have the Humax and have been told I have a quad LNB
on my dish (SAT SEEKER A85) Can anyone in word of one syllable (I am a simple sole) how to wire the whole lot up ? Is it something one can do oneself relatively easily? am off to France next week would like to have it all working by then if possible.

Cheers to all,

Basics ... There should be “aerial” leads coming from the quad lnb, and two lnb connections on the humax screw two of the lnb leads to the humax box lnb ins. Run a hdmi lead from the humax to the tv, set tv source to hdmi. Depending on the sat dish, switch on power to dish it should find the satellite , switch on humax and tv go to settings signal strength should be showing, select tune, you may have to input your postcode, let it search for stations and watch tv. You can switch off power to dish once satellite is found. The two lnb leads allow you to watch and record. Hope this basic routine helps some setups are more complicated but this works for me.

You will need a power supply to the humax box, we cut the mains lead off and wired direct to a 12v supply (the box needs 12v)

I wish I had done that, I bought a 12 volt lead from eBay for mine and after watching TV for about 3 hours when on Leisure battery’s the picture started to flash, so I took the plug apart and checked the wire and it was only about the size of speaker wire, causing voltage drop. I replaced most with bigger wire and it’s fine now.
