I recall seeing somewhere on the internet that there is a list of free sites across France situated on farms and vineyards. All they ask is that you buy some of their produce whilst you are there. Trouble is I can't find it again. Help.

This is the one , we have been in it for 4 years, it is similer to britstops here, can be expensive if you use the shops and wine cellar things and can be very hard to find and nearly always in out of the way places , we were going to drop it this year but signed up again in the end, as if you have plenty time to wander about and want to meet real French people they are really good , but have found you don't have to sign up again as they very rarely ask to see the book or anything so last years will do.;)

We bough France Passion and BritStops a couple of years ago. Try as we might, we could never find a France a passion site that was near where we were or wanted to go, so we didn't renew it. Same with BritStops. We planned a route in the UK and tried phoning the BritStops sites. Most didn't answer, some weren't in the scheme anymore, some couldn't guarantee a big enough place for us to park. We gave up with that too.

We found a France Passion site a few weeks ago, more by accident than design, and because we weren't a Member it cost us €8 for a nights stop.
That included EHU, water and waste disposal and we had splendid views across fields and vineyards.
Other Motorhomes that used the Aire and were France Passion members stayed for free and had complimentary drinks.
It was on the edge of a small village, with no shops or eating places, and was as remote a place as you'd expect to find.
The owner didn't try to sell us any of the Champagne he produced and I don't know if the France Passion members bought any but they did seem enthusiastic about being miles from 'civilisation'.
If you like remote and cheap places to stay then France Passion might be for you.
The Owner had spent quite a bit of money developing the Aire and somehow he's got to get his money back so perhaps there's some pressure on the Members to buy his produce, Champagne in this case, which may or may not be ideal for most of us.

We tried France Passion!
We couldn't find most of them and when we did could never find anyone there nor where to park!
Only tried it one year, didn't bother again!

Whilst agreeing with your post, it is better since last year , they now put coordinates in the book so they are easier to find but even now there is very rarely any signs as to exactly where to park, and the lack of anyone about at least lets you out of having to buy anything;)(y)

We have stayed on numerous vine yards, buffalo farm, goose farm, peanut farm ( apparently the only one in France), mussels beds, a small goat farm in the mountains on the Italian border, dairy farms, veg farms, Apple farms, hotel car parks, and various others I've forgot , but as been said very few people about pushing stuff and if we have seen nothing we want to buy, we usually just drive off in the morning, no ones bothered yet but they are all more interesting than aires, but on the other hand , not knocking aires as we use them more and they are useualy close to where you are, but for real France and if you are new to France , passion is well worth the money, for one year anyway(y)

You do get the impression that some of them signed up years ago and more or less forgot about it or can't be bothered , what signs you can find are usually washed away or overgrown but saying that we have always been welcomed if we do find someone , but most are just farm workers who are doing their own job and just can't be bothered.
BUT saying all that we have also found some lovely places that otherwise you would never know exist.
