Hi all,

next year we are moving away from our usual month in France to head for Italy. we are keen free campers and love the lakes and mountains (im an avid cyclist).

Can anyone offer some advice as to the general rule in Italy (north) regarding free camping, we will be trying to find the less tourist destinations that offer lakes and bih hills.

cheers

Generally illegal in National Parks but elsewhere you should be OK unless there are signs forbidding it of course. :)

If you can find some really remote places you should find places to wildcamp but they won't be close to the lakes.
I found one in the Monte Baldo hills above Garda which was excellent. Leisure centre carpark in nice village with spectacular views down the valley.
The areas around the lakes are generally developed and campsites pricey like everything in Italy :(

last time we were in Italy our ACSI pitch at one site was cheaper than the sosta across the road. we are probably heading that way but different area early next year.
