No it isn't . The police might try that on but it isn't correct. It has to be weighed. I have posted a letter from dvsa to Ifor williams stating that fact before on here.
I agree you are not going to tow your car with passengers in it so as it’s classed as a trailer it’s not fully loaded so as long as you are under your GTW should be OK.😊

Prompted me to find this in item 1 of the above link.

Where the sum of the maximum plated weights of the towing vehicle and of the trailer added together exceed the plated GCW of the towing vehicle, this is not a problem as long as the ‘actual’ weights of the vehicle and trailer (which may not be fully laden at the time) do not exceed the plated GCW.

I think you need to weigh it with A Frame without anyone in it and that’s your trailer weight?😊

Sorry I was wrong - what I quoted applies to Driving Licence allowability!

The figure to use for DDuffs toad will be the actual weight of the toad as towed.

Perhaps as a guide we have a car trailer and when I first got it I weighed it loaded with car including anything in it such as fuel etc. Which is 1690 Kg my van is gvw 4500 kg and GTW of 6000kg so as long as my van weighs under 4250 kg I’m OK.

Thanks all, as I thought the kerb weight plus the A frame (10kg) and any fuel. So around 950-1000kg total....which kind of brings me back to the start.....the vans Gvw is 5250 and the gtw is 6000.....I do think the 5250 maybe quite favourable, but I guess it is a large van.....I just wish I had the figures for the weight of the van empty, as that would resolve it! Appreciate everybody’s input. 😎

Yes, I knew that but after half a lifetime being told gross weight applies it sort of sticks in your mind.
The OP is still going to have to lose around ¼ ton of van payload though to keep the train weight in check.

many many years! since I was a kid
ask the dealer to look in the van's service history for the coc as the unladen weight may be on there as shipping weight etc

I still think you should weigh your toad, and not taking the ’brochure’ weight
It will cost you a tenner
I would take the van to a public weighbridge with all your belongings in it this will tell you how much you will be allowed to tow
I have a burstner tag axle fully loaded with a 100kg scooter in the garage was 464kg

Hi Dave,
Our is a 8400GD on the Mercedes chassis but it was weighed new at the factory before leaving and amounted to 4000kgs. It might help establish a ball park figure.

20+ years. Previously Hymer B654 and Hymer S660 both c/w tow-bars.
Just to really p*ss on your parade - when towing a trailer it is not the actual weight but the plated weight that counts so (as a TOAD is viewed as a trailer and has to conform to trailer rules with regard to lights, reflectors and brakes) it would be the Gross Plated Weight that needs to be allowed for.
That’s not true. Plated weights are the criteria used for driving licence categories but if you get pulled over, it’s the actual weights that are relevant. You would have to be put on a weighbridge......
