While positioning a camera I bought at Aldi lastnight I found this socket hidden under a black cap, any ideas what its intended use is?

This is what it looks like when fully removed.

The hole it's in is the same shape as the base of the green bit.
I removed it and use the hole to get usb extension leads from the back of the media unit to the top of the dashboard.
I believe it's original purpose is to fill the hole for a non-fitted optional extra like auto-lights \ wipers \ etc.

This is in my Fiat Grande Punto (car). Thought it just held the dash panel down ?

Since 2008 & many years tugging
It's a sun sensor for when full climate control fitted.
I thought that was on the heater control panel the little grills on either side.
If it is it will get something throw over it next time we drive through France in the winter, get freezing feet when it's sunny as the heating turns itself down.

Just pulled mine out and its the same, so I have ordered a usb socket and see if I can make it fit, then its just a short lead to the camera.

I asked the same question a while ago, never found out what it was. No wires running to mine it just sits there under its black cover!!

As Bigparky said.
The only thing the workshop manual suggests is a sensor for solar gain through the windscreen for fully automatic climate control.
