It may help if you could give a little more details as to the sort of advice you need,
i assume you know its a Dethleffs and a overhead cab, probably 6 birth and likely to be over 3.5T so a C1 license is needed.

The one I’ve seen advertised was 3850kg....
Have a look at this video:-

That is probably correct - maybe the one I saw had been up-plated!
The only issue with 3500kg that I’d be very concerned about is payload....!!
It’s a six-berth ‘van - how little would each occupant be allowed to take weight-wise?

Thank you for your help. Do you indeed explaining how that works with weight and pay load then? Insurance wise etc. Is 3500 the weight if the vehicle and not the pay load?

Not an expert, but my understanding is that the gross weight, also known as the Maximum Technically Permissible Laden Mass (MTPLM) is the total weight of the vehicle when it is carrying its maximum payload - that is, your vehicle should not exceed 3500kg (in this case) when carrying people, their luggage, diesel, water, gas and so on. The payload is the difference between the Mass in Running Order (MIRO - what the base vehicle weighs complete with non-removable fixtures and fittings) and the MTPLM. For example, if the MIRO is 3200kg, the payload would be 3500-3200 = 300kg.
This may look like a lot, but is quickly used when adding people, luggage, equipment, etc.
Most importantly, it is your responsibility to ensure your ‘van does not exceed the MTPLM!!

Other Funsters will be able to explain this better than I have - but I hope that you get the general idea......... ;)

extremely impractical to have a 6 birth van with a max weight of 3500kg. Just the 6 occupants can easily top 300kg without food, clothes, water, diesel, and anything else like kids bikes and toys. The increase of ANPR cameras and in road weight sensors make getting caught more likely. Round here the DVLA and police had a crack down on horse boxes/trailers and boats on trailers. Shocking how many they caught and fined, plus when stopped if overweight cannot continue till the weight is removed down to legal limits. More than one horse I heard had to be unloaded and collected by another horsebox. Which of your family do you plan to leave at the motorway services?

Ask for a photo of the weight plate off the bonnet Slam panel.
That will confirm the weights.
As has been said above, 6 births unlikely to be under 3.5t when it's loaded.
Even if the plate states 3.5t max.
If I were you I would be doing a little more digging about its unladen and max weights.

3.5 tonnes is the max weight including the vehicle all the passengers and everything in the vehicle a van like that will weigh at least 2.8 tonnes minimum

Thank you all for your help.
I inquired about the weight and on the log book it has the original 3500kg Ford plate but Dethleff have their own plate and it is the 3850kg.

I am assuming that this is an error and the Dethleff plate is the one that should have been recorded on the log book?

Yes, 3850KG should be in the V5 log book, and you will need a C1 licence to drive it.
Even at 3850Kgs no way could you take 6 people in that van, be tough enough with 3/4.
How many people were you intending to have on board, that would help make the decision of whether it is fit for purpose or not.
Hope that helps.

Thanks Les.

There are 4 of us; 2 adults and 2 small children. Only after a 6 birth for the odd guest. Where we live, we will only be travelling 15-20 miles at the most so mileage etc isnt an issue really.

Would you have recommendations or know how to search for these elusive 3500kg campers? We just need to premanent beds as making them up of an evening and morning was the biggest put off!

Well......most, if not all of the ‘vans under 6m long will be 3500kg, and quite a few under 7m too - our Majestic is 7.02m, has 4 belted seats, and is 4 berth (1 fixed double, and two small singles/1 double made up in the lounge area) - have a look at the Majestic 155 layout on the Marquis Motorhomes website for more detail. Other Funsters can advise on larger ‘vans layout and weight..... ;)
