While waiting patiently for new Adamo, have been on some FB Groups and it seems there is a concern with the Ford Transit later models with water leaking into the engine well and frying the electrics. Apart from Bailey, there are a number of Transit based vans - has anyone had this issue and was it a problem getting it fixed?

On the mk7's it would pool in the injector ,usually number 1 for lhd & number 4 or the gearbox/fuelpump electrics on rhd. The problem is the unsealed holes under the black plastic scuttle for the windscreen as both sets for right & left hand drive are punched & the unused set just left open .Water off screen can run under the plastic. Just seal with silicone to stop the problem. I'd guess the mark 8 would be the same & might even have other unplugged holes?

TBH I dont know which Mk of Transit I will get. Depends on the build date in Bristol I guess. Someone on FB suggested that these were built in Turkey. When was the Mk8 introduced?

Mk 8 is the same. Mk 8 has been out for many years. All Transits are made in Turkey.

Doesn't affect the electrics but can cause the injectors to rust in place.

How can the injectors rust in place? they're made of aluminium have an aluminium injector rail and are fitted into an aluminium head. They are also buried under 6cms of rubber. Aluminium doesn't rust.

Common problem on mk8 transits. As stated water drips onto top of engine then works down to sit on top of injectors where they can cause severe corrosion issues. More common with likes of motorhome where not used regularly as everyday use will have heat dry off the injectors etc.
I use a cover on top of engine when it sits and have had no issues.
…..and aluminium does corrode!

Caravanned for 30 years, nearly two years in with the motorhome.
I have extended on the left and right skuttle drain trays which directs the water further into the wing voids. I have also siliconed between the screen and the top of the plastic skuttle unit. The water still manages to lay on top of the air filter housing so improved but not totally cured, so possibly a latent issue further into the ownership. Its the only issue in 16k miles relating to the base vehicle which other than above has been faultless. I meet lots of transit owners through my line of work and the feedback has always been positive with lots of vans getting up to 200k in 3 years with only servicing carried out to date. If anyone has managed to cure the water ingress though, please share as to how.

Nope, it's a myth on the Ecoblue Panther you'd need to submerge the engine to see any excess water come in contact with the injectors. Rain water irrigation can't reach the injector heads due to the channels built into the fully encompassing thick rubber cover on the head under the air filter box.

The problem was on the the Mk8's built until 2017 and all of the Mk7's with the older Duratorq Puma engine fitted. It also effected PSA, Volvo, Mazda, Jaguar & Land Rover.

Yes there is corrosion in aluminium but the oxide protects it, there is no very damaging galvanic corrosion due to contact with other metals - there is no other metal, which is what this whole story is about and has been for well over a decade.

Speak to any Ford tech at any Transit Centre ( the only one's who are authorised to service the Ecoblue) and they'll all say they've not had a problem removing the injectors.
Are they stiff and tight? Yes of course they are... there's around 45000psi of pressure in the compression chamber which must be contained but the 12 -20 tonnes of pressure required to remove them is standard.

The rumour is made worse as none authorised garages are using generic injector removal tools rather than the tool specifically designed for the Ecoblue.

The global recall has nothing to do with water it's due to poor quality ceramic supplied to Continental by Piezo Technologies at the base of injector protecting the the flaps and needle. Ford are now beginning to use Bosch/Siemens.

Hi, with regards to the injectors I have spoken to various owners who had suffered with the limp mode and replacement injectors as a consequence and under a thousand miles from new. Ford did attend to mine on the driveway, after it had been flagged as a potentail issue (recall) although after plugging it in they reported back that everything was fine. Engine build date January 2020. Interestingly spoke to a 2022 Benimar owner earlier in the month that needed the injectors replaced shortly after collection from new. This did get me wondering! However, the engine is now on over 16k miles in so hopefully this should have surfaced as a problem before now?. I do believe that there was inconsistency in the date of the fitting of the original injectors or maybe only some have gone wrong? Which could make this a latent issue further on?. I do like preventative measures generally however in this case it would need to be "sort the problem if and when it happens". Lots on line and everything I have read was for the earlier models, apart from the guy this month.

Pleased to hear about the thick rubber cover under the air filter.

Yeah the injector recall has overlapped as recently as late 2021 cab builds throughout the Trigano group due to 2019 early 2020 engines not being used due to the Covid shut down in Turkey. Bailey sourced their first tranche from Indonesia hence why they had the 160ps earlier than it's official European launch.

Hi, assuming then with your back ground knowledge and no faults physically or logged on the vehicle that my engine should be ok?. I have the 170ps engine whether that makes any difference?.

Thanks.

I had a chausson with ford chassis 2017 injectors failed after first 100 miles ! Took 6 weeks to get to ford dealership from Bosch Germany , I was told . It had the 170 automatic engine . Unfortunately the injectors failed again during the following 2 years and covered about 5000 miles by then . Quite a number of Fords around that time suffered the same problems (y):(

It's purely down to when the engine was built in terms of the injector recall, originally it was thought to only effect engines built for the UK market between May & October 2019 for the Custom, Transit & Ranger - around 19500 in total but later it was noticed that the injectors had also made their way into the 1st quarter of 2020 too. Ironically the Covid shut down allowed Dagenham to reset and limit the issue.

Interesting, Ford didn't switch to Bosch until 2020 prior to that the injectors were supplied by Continental VDO.

On a motorhome make-specific forum this Ford injector problem still pops up on a weekly basis. It seems to affect all years of motorhomes and not just ones made in a specific period. In some cases the problem has taken far longer to resolve due to the injectors corroding in the cylinder head, due to water running down from the scuttle. In a couple of cases this resulted in a new cylinder head. There was talk of a software update, but this does not seem to have resolved the problem.

Well the problem is it’s difficult to know what’s true , you have to take things at face value motor trader’s often spin a yarn to suit themselves. The Ford dealership hadn’t got a clue of what the problem was at the time it was the AA that diagnosed the problem! I have to say that I thought the Ford chassis, engine and gearbox was superior too the Fiat Ducato offering.(y);)

Shame you haven't named the forum as I run a make specific closed Facebook page and have very good access to Ford UK. Motorhomes have only been built on the Ford engine in question for just over 5 years, That'll be Chausson & Benimar. Auto Trail 3 years, Bailey 2.5 years & Swift less than 12 months. Plus I doubt Thor/Hymer would have signed an 8 year partnership with Ford or Bailey beginning to build PVC's on their panel vans if the the injectors suffered major damage over such a short length of time.

I know this is an old thread but I have just been recovered by the AA after my 68 plate Ford transit went into limp mode with diesel leaking into the engine. It has been caused by a corroded fuel injector 2, caused by rainwater sitting on it. Unfortunately it has snapped in half and now needs a specialist to drill it out.
I don’t really understand about engines Stoosal you say you have a cover on your engine, where do I get one?

Depends what engine is in it, a 2.2 Duratec fitted from 2014-2017/18 or a 2.0 Ecoblue fitted from 2017. It's about van build date not registration date. A lot of converters at this time opted for surplus stock base vehicles with the older engine fitted to keep costs down as Ford sold them off cheaply.

For the Ecoblue engine Ford have a proprietary injector puller which stops the snapping rather than a generic tool other garages use. They need a lot of newton meters to pull them. On the Ecoblue I doubt any rainwater can get anywhere near the injectors. The newer engines create a huge amount of heat which evaporates 99% of any sitting water plus the injectors are centrally located low down in the head under 6cm of molded ergonomically shaped rubber. It's labour intensive to get anywhere near them.

It’s a 2L eco blue and the garage it’s in is called Fuel Injector Specialists, so I’m presuming they know what they’re talking about? The AA guy told me the local Ford dealer had a 6 week wait for repairs and my local garage advised me to go to the garage I went to.

My vehicle is mainly stored indoors so I only have to cover when we are away in it or washing it so it doesn’t sit with water on engine before it gets stored away. I have a simple piece of flexible polystyrene sheet which I sit on top of engine and it allows the water, which drips from window/wipers etc, to simply hit it and then run off down the side of the engine away from the air cover and injectors etc.

If you want a more permanent option then you can look at the Benimar site. Somebody on there makes them…..

The issue is any water/condensation that gets down to injectors may sit there for a long time if the motorhome is used infrequently. Day to day most will not get any water as it will evaporate with heat etc. Corrosion starts making them very difficult to get out or damage is caused as they get pulled out due to the corrosion etc.

Tread softly, they won't have the specialised tool, but as it's already snapped that doesn't matter now. They won't have access to the Ford database to log the work. Ford won't market either until 2025 when the copywrite expires. For info, the injectors can't rust or corrode nor is there any steel to start any galvanic process. It's the massive amount of heat, a few thousand degrees inside, which makes them particularly difficult to remove and snap without the Ford puller not rain water... that's a myth on the Ecoblue but was an ongoing issue on the previous 2.2 Duratec fitted in the older MK8's - the commercial engine they shared with Peugeot until 2018.

Those selling the under scuttle trays are just praying on owners lack of knowledge and worry. We've banned 4 from our owners group as none of the vans were built before late 2019.

The trays actually cause overheating within the EGR's as they seriously restrict air flow at the top end of the engine, for the 2019 facelift Ford even replaced the steel bonnet with one made of aluminium in order to dissipate heat more quickly.

Stay well clear. Ford won't perform a service if one is fitted due to it restricting access to the airbox. It's also classed as an engine modification meaning that technically you should inform your insurance company.

Good luck with the repair.

Well if they didn’t have the correct tool and snapped it then it’s cost me a couple of hundred pounds for a specialist to come in and drill it out!

I have just watched this YouTube video with a specialist puller used. There was a definite rust problem.

I've got Rob Drews cover on my Mk8 Transit 72 plate Bailey Adamo. A lot of Bailey owners have had this issue with water overflowing from the scuttle onto the injectors and basically roasting them. Look on Faceache for the Bailey Adamo Owners Group and search for Rob Drew.

Just to update. I got the diverter tray from Rob Drew. Today I washed my windscreen and decided to have a look to see if there was any water going in.
I think the water is going in around the near side wiper attachment.
Not very clear but you can see the water drip and the tray is catching it.
