I have an old Mazda B2500 double cab pickup truck. It is exactly the same as the Ranger, just a different badge on the grill. As far as am aware it doesn't have an immobiliser. they are a bit of a bitch to bleed up though. I have to use a bleeder pump when doing a filter change. The stand pipe from the tank is also susceptible to rotting and drawing air.

Wonder if the injection pump seals have dried out Bill.
Never worked on that engine so don't know if it's common rail or mech pump.

Might also have diesel bug in the tank and lines

Can you take the stop solenoid out and bench test Bill.
You could confirm the lift pump with it out too... Bit messy if fuel does come out the hole but you'd know if fuel was getting to the pump or not.
Even attempt a start without the plunger in place in the solenoid. You need to stall it of course if it does start.
Had to do that on an old diesel escort van once to get home when the solenoid failed.
