We’re currently minded to postpone our Tunnel booking from next Sat until October but it would be helpful if anyone knows ...

- which of any of the main supermarkets chains require masks? I think if I knew there were supermarkets where it was mandatory I would feel more relaxed about shopping there.

- is there a website which gives daily new infections by department?

I have googled but could only find cumulative which isn’t helpful as I’d like to know current risk ...

Thanks in advance as always ...

They only seem to insist on them in Germany. France as usual is a lot less strict. Every where is pretty relaxed about the virus now. I wouldn't worry.

We live in France and most people here wear masks in Supermarkets, those that don't are usually in the younger age group.
Ikea (if you use them) have security on the door and won't let you pass into the store without a mask, once you are inside again the younger generation tend to remove them.

The Casino we went in had a notice on the door. Wear a Mask! However the law is you wear one if the shop requires you to.

This is a good example of a post which I am sure is written with the best of intentions, but being completely inaccurate is risking perhaps more than someone's holiday Look up the France regs on the Internet

Why the supposed problem of wearing a mask?

Wear one in every supermarket or anywhere else indoors, for everybodys health, including your own

Rather, I was looking for reassurance that they ARE used 😉 I should have been clearer .. I have edited my post accordingly.

There are novel ways of wearing a mask. We've all seen the chin strap and the earring. Saw a bloke today wearing his on his elbow, presumably so he could sneeze into it.

Eh.--- Which bit is completely inaccurate?

If you take a look at the guinea pig thread i posted photos from inside a massive out of town auchan near st omer.

The trick to seeing these huge shops nigh on empty is to go between 12 and 2.

We all have our own personal risk evaluations but going between these times and not choosing lidls with their occasional tight aisles reduces risk substantially imo

Any good? At least it is up to date

Yes, thank you. That has more detail. Population density obviously plays a big part do more rural would be safest 👍.

ALL shops here insist on masks and hand sanitising, supermarkets also insist on disposable gloves.
Spain’s not an option for us though ... Scotland insist on quarantine on return and I don’t have enough holiday for that.

Thanks, yes I saw these and they were reassuring. The advice to go at lunchtime is good -thank you.

Well I for one will be very concerned where I go and cleanliness.

Best stay at home then - if that's where you feel the safest

I think you have to take each establishment as you find it, as they vary wildly in their application of the rules. In my area of France, my recent observations are that staff of restaurants and bars are adhering to the mask-wearing and table cleaning. Most smaller shop premises require masks and limit the number within at any time.

The local supermarkets vary significantly. Carrefour has been consistently very strict on numbers, masks and hand cleanser. The staff are all masked. Intermarche seems to have been a lot more relaxed, although all staff are masked and hand cleanser is available.

Casino, the smallest in the town, shocked me, though. It tends to be used by the older community on my side of the town, so when I went in a couple of weeks ago, I was surprised to find that of the score or so of people in the shop, staff and customers, I was the only one wearing a mask! A further visit on Wednesday and again, no staff and only 3 customers masked.

This contrasts with the week I have just spent in Spain. Lidl required a mask, hand cleanser and the wearing of supplied disposable gloves whilst within the store, with direct supervision at the door. I had my temperature taken before being admitted to the campsite. Restaurants and bar staff everywhere were diligent in mask-wearing and cleaning tables between customers. The campsite was busy at the weekend but almost empty during the week.

Here in the Lot we have not had the normally expected numbers of tourists arriving so far, the Dutch currently being most in evidence. My local campsite is probably at no more than 10-15% of capacity, massively down on a normal July. If you are pondering whether to risk coming over, please do so, for you will be welcomed and you'll probably be rather safer than staying at home.

After cancer and coronavirus, the most likely killer will probably be another 'C' - complacency. I'm applying two rules to myself:

Rule 1 - Look after Number 1

Rule 2 - Don't do anything that increases the risk for anyone else.

Stay safe, folks!🙂

We were over ln France at the start of July, and in all the supermarkets we chose the time to go in. As suavecarve said between 12 and 2 is lunch time and the shops were empty, we also chose to go in an hour before closing time, and again it was deserted, with a choice of which check out to use. There was no absolute rule about mask wearing, although we chose to wear ours.

little bit harsh !!

we dont know each others circumstances, how much at risk or how vulnerable someone is. just because someone is vulnerable it doesnt mean they shouldnt or cant go out, it just means they may need to be extra careful, hence their questions i suppose?

to the OP, France was absolutely fine, i didnt see a shop where it said 'no need to wear a mask' but i did see lots of them asking you to wear a mask. not everyone did, i suppose based on their conception of risk. restaurant or cafe staff wore masks, but not the customers.

i travelled on the 15th June and got back to the UK on the 30th and have quarantined up until today

We have been here over three weeks now and I was trying to reassure the op that it's quite safe now. More safe than the UK I think.. I was trying to give them the benefit of what we have found having traveled through France, Belgium. Luxembourg and now Germany. Everybody has to make their own mind up as to how safe they are going to feel.

Came into France from Germany on Tuesday and popped into the Tourist Info Centre to asked it we had to wear masks in shops etc, and the young girl there just shrugged and says you are supposed to but not everybody bothers, a typical French answer there then. Did a Lidl shop yesterday and some had masks on and some didnt so it seems take it as you want.

We've only been in one supermarket since we arrived, and that felt fine. Staff were wearing masks, as were most of the over- 50s customers. The younger ones weren't.
It was the market, today which worried me most. Not overcrowded, stalls well-spaced and many customers wearing masks. However, few stall-holders were masked and artisan cheeses were displayed, unwrapped on trays on counters, which were just at customer nose-height. There was no way that I could have been tempted to buy any.
Likewise , there were the usual lunchtime queues outside the boulangeries , with customers emerging carrying armsfull of unwrapped bread, allowing all-and-sundry to breath all over it. Just not for me, I'm afraid, however much I would have enjoyed a cheese baguette for lunch. 🤢
Please don't let this deter you from coming. I don't think the supermarkets are a problem. We'll be buying some wrapped cheese from there.

They only seem to insist on them in Germany.
My neighbour said that in Germany 2weeks ago & again this week it was full details just to eat in a restaurant. masks everywhere ,whereas France was far more lacksadaisical & spain it is obligatory. Catlunia has now brought in mandatory masks anywhere outside.

Of Course, as a Mask does not protect YOU. Unless ALL are wearing them they are just a decoration!. and a pointless exercise IMV?.
