Does anyone have personal experience of any particular folding shovel that they carry in their MH. If so, would you care to recommend and/or provide a link? Thanks!

Are you intending to dig for gold?:giggle:
If so,let me know where it is please.;)

Is the shovel for digging yourself into ..... or out of ..... a hole? :ROFLMAO:

Cheers!

Yep.. I used to use one when metal detecting..
Look for trenching tool and do not buy the cheapest,,, They fold up on you pretty quick

Ive got ex military foldable shovel. Good piece of kit. Robust, but a bit heavy, if you are tight on weight.
Loads on ebay 👍

Ha! Possible uses might include burying black gold on the odd occasion (well away from water courses and using green organic chemical only!)

A very ‘earthy’ comment!

I've not seen a folding shovel that's any good so far, if it's for the van, I'm sure you could find room for a micro shovel like these ones from Toolstation ?

I’ve been looking at eBay and others. The choice is bewildering! They all seem to have different spade widths/sizes from the teeniest to supermassive and some look more like mega-survival tools for war. I’d just like something sturdy and compact that will dig me a hole reasonably quickly without breaking, or shift a bit of snow/mud if needed.

jockaneezer you may have hit on the ideal solution with the roughneck micro shovel idea. Thank you! Amazing that you happened to have a handy catalogue that you could photograph too. (y)

I think you might be better off buying a normal small spade at the garden centre....but a good quality one. I often use one in the garden for light digging and it doesn’t weigh much, but does the job well.
It’s about 60% of the width of a normal spade and the handle size is proportionate.

Sounds like one of the roughneck-type ones and I think that will be the way forward. (y)

I’ve found that leaving the digging to SHMBO is always the best bet. I’m sure to dig in the wrong place, the wrong size and the wrong depth. SHMBO has just suggested a depth of 6 feet, I wonder what that’s all about.....

Cheers!

Yes, some of the foldup spades are like a swiss army knife. Glock do one with a saw attachment.😀
Mine is a bog standard NATO type, it is very compact and can be folded to act like a pick axe as well. Its 23 inches fully extended, but only 10x6 in plastic case. Not as weighty as I first thought at 1.4Kg.
Great for the car or Motorhome👍

That's the same as the one i have, got it off eBay and it works reasonably well, enough to dig my front wheels out twice:whistle:

We found one i bought when doing a bit of garage moving about, couldn't call it tidying or clearing out. Onky used once to get the frozen snow away from the front of my car, it was over the bumper.
The spade was useless, used a garden one instead.

If u are going for a fold up make sure it is an ex-army ex-nato one some on ebay are absolutely rubbish.
Carried one for years thankfully never needed to use while a away with the van.

jessthedog - thank you for a really helpful post, especially going to the trouble of taking photos with the tape measure for sizing. Brilliant info.

I have one similar to post#13, found that the first time I used it it wasn't quite up to the job because the damned thing was as blunt as a brick!

When I got home took an Angle Grinder to it and gave it Knife edges, it now does the job!

The edge with the saw teeth once sharpened , and!, each tooth just misaligned, on alternate sides, ever so slightly, talking about a couple of thou here, will cut through a branch, but if your edges are sharp enough you can hack through it anyway.

I carry one of these on the MH. Packs up small and nice and light. Never know when you might need to dig a hole, cut down a tree, go spear fishing and the like. :giggle:

Amazon product ASIN B085ZVZ7GR
The Swiss army spade (y) I bet the whistle comes in handy

I can vouch for the Roughneck Micro Round Shovel.
Good sturdy little shovel.

Hi. I just bought a SH detector, just for fun. There are a lot of old relics around here...
It's a C.Scope 1220XD. Apparently, it's the biz!

Nice bit of kit that.. my very first was a C Scope :)
Nowadays I have a Minelab Safari and a Fisher F2 ...
But.. I reckoon I will be selling them shortly because ever since the stroke I find it really hard to dig and they are just sitting on the shelf

One thing I would suggest you invest in is a pinpointer
At circa £100 they aint cheap but they save hours of frustration searching through clumps of dirt for what your detector detected !

I've got one, not actually used in anger yet, I bought it after a German dug me out with one. They are small, light and strong.

This came with an extra small coil about 4" diameter: I presume it is what you suggest?
