Does anyone know if Holland is suffering the same flooding as the UK? Surely they must be experiencing the same heavy rainfall that we are getting.BUSBY.

Well if their government twiddle their thumbs over flood defenses one third of the country would be under water does tend to concentrate the mind;)

The infrastructure exists on a permanent basis. If it didn't most of the Netherlands would be under seawater. I can't believe a few extra meters from their rivers equals a spring tide. Their worry is a rise in sea level.

Bit like the UK at the moment then..This regular flooding has been serious here now for the last 30 years at least..Lack of investment as usual. BUSBY.

Even before that, Half the East coast disappeared under water back in the 50`s. Followed by promises "it wont happen again", "lessons will be learned", "Coastal defences will be upgraded". We are still waiting?.

The main reason that the 'Netherlands are ahead of the game' is that a large proportion of their landmass was reclaimed from the sea in the first, many years ago

A lot of the fens here in england were drained with the help of dutch engineers i didnt realise it was so successful that the land sank below the levels of the rivers hence the large number of pumping stations which would have originally been windmills

Or, the wrong kind of investment - too much development allowed on the flood plains.

There was an interview with a developer on the TV the other night and he was explaining that they will “lift” the flood plain up and put a strong solid structure raised up. Did seem very confident that the new houses would then not flood. Didn’t however solve where the water would go instead of the flood plain (which is let’s face it is what it’s for) presumably the water having nowhere to go would instead flood the surrounding areas and houses instead!

Also presumably he would not be living in the area going forward and would of moved on with the money.

and a little boy with a very sore finger.
Indeed and on a similar theme as in stopping the dykes leaking, apparently that is why they graze sheep on the dykes as they trample the holes made by rabbits voles etc, or it could be completely untrue but I fell for it.

Listened to a developer on tv stating that they only built on floodplains if they build the site up with land fill to ensure it would not flood.Probably wouldnt but houses further down stream will because valuable needed flood plain has disapeared and flood water has nowhere to go..BUSBY,,

It really beggers belief that they dont see this. But then again they probably do and choose to ignore it as sadly, its all about the money ☹

People buy a house built on a flood plain, then bitch when it floods, and start screaming for the Government to help.

What happened to doing a little research, asking the locals for instance?

Yes! I was caught out once in Port Ohope NZ. Pre internet I spent hours in the reference library after work each day, found a law from 1900 that hadn't been repealed. Took on the District Council, it cost me $NZ180
and 18 months of my time, cost the Council $NZ1-1/4 million to put the problem right.
