Hi,

Just wondering if anyone knows of reputable companies in Hampshire / Berkshire area who will fit customer supplied parts.

Recently had a quote from my local main dealer for supply and fit:
Fiamma awning/canopy
150w solar panel with dual controller etc

In both cases, the prices to supply and fit were almost 2 x as much as I can buy the same items for ! .
Don't mind paying for fitting, but would like it to be at a reasonable cost.

Thanks,

I'd find someone who specialises in supplying / installing those particular accessories. Dealerships are just that & I'm not convinced that they're all competent to work on the vehicles they supply.

I have a suspicion a number of dealers do just that, adding their margin to the cost of the subcontractor.
Either that or they are just plain greedy.
Was quoted £180 as a fitting charge for a single Gasit cylinder and fill point. DIY the job was done in less than an hour and that included a good few minutes checking dimensions before I cut the skirt.

Most reputable companies will never even discuss fitting customer supplied parts.

There's a very simple reason for this. It's more trouble than it's worth.

If they do the job using your parts you will, quite rightly, expect them to warranty the work. You're asking them to fit and take warranty responsibility for parts that they've got no traceability or comeback on. For all they know the solar panel you buy on ebay and want them to fit might have been sat on a shelf for 15 years and half degraded or even be not working at all.

If there is a problem you will expect them to deal with it under warranty. If the investigation work establishes that the problem is with the part you supplied then it's not a warranty job and they will need to charge you full price for the the job.

This is the point where the massive row usually starts.

I'm sure some of the traders on here might share some horror stories if they happen to see this thread.

When we occasionally fitted customer supplied AC systems, we made it clear its your equipment and warranty is nothing to do with us.
I remember one job in particular where the customer bough cheap LG ceiling cassettes. We fitted them and 3 years down the road the drain pans started leaking, they were scrap. We quoted to supply and fit new systems and didn't hear anything back. They've gone bust now.

Fiamma awning/canopy

Personally i would recommend @Johns_Cross_Motorhomes for the awning . They fitted one to mine last year , morning's work . Total cost came to 800 odd quid and they supplied the awning . I'm sure Glen can fit the solar with no problem's . Now i know you wanted to go local , but i arrived the night before and stayed in the yard , with electric . Failing that there's a quiet campsite less than 5 mile away , that i've also stayed in . Just give's ya an excuse to use the van , me ol mucker .

We had a great week last summer at a site near Battle. Called into Johns Cross for a few bits and pieces and must say it was very refreshing to talk to people who knew what they were on about and took the time to ensure we had everything we wanted. Will give them a call to see what they can do for me.

Fully understand the points re supplier fitting customer parts etc. Just really don't like being ripped off ! I can buy the awning at just over half the price that a dealer has quoted for supply and fit. I know it is the SAME awning !

Spot on

Simply not worth fitting customer supplied stuff...........if we have a problem with anything we have a 'margin' to cover replacement or repair. Often the manufacturer or other supplier just wash their hands and leave us to deal with a very unhappy customer.............we are then seen as the 'villain'.......it's easier to refuse than have an unhappy customer.

Individual fitters are the way to go - if you are happy to take the risk on what you have bought:)

I could suggest you have a short break in the Plymouth area.
"My" Motorhome repairer of choice, Tamar Towing of Plympton have done the business for me a couple of times. They did the necessary on the Gaslow, (Mrs Emmit refused to allow me to drill the hole) and then they fitted a new small rooflight in the bathroom. Both done to a very high standard using material supplied by me.

Totally agree . While my van was in the workshop , i walked round the main shop . I came out with a cycle rack , which they arranged to be put in the van for me . Then when i was looking for the coffee machine , they asked if they could help . I told them what i was looking for , to which i was asked how many sugar's . I promptly had a proper cup of tea , thrust in my hand . Excellent customer care .
