HI TECS I WANT TO INSTALL USB SOCKET 5v 1a to 5v 2.1a can any one tell me what end to put the fuse and what size I got a rapido 966m also do it use power when not in use thanks for your help Andy

Hi beware the £3 chinese usb sockets as they overheat and melt. Fuse at source to protect the wire. And yes they draw a current even when not in use

I use 12v sockets with a plug in adaptor when required to charge phones etc

Oops fuse size 5amp if its just low current usb charging needed

I've fitted several but they are all wired to circuits I can turn off when the MH is not being used. However, although they do draw a current when not in use it isn't a lot and if you have solar I wouldn't worry about it. I just prefer to be able to isolate them to minimize any fire risk.

As suggested, I wouldn't buy the cheapest, my first was around £20 but you can get the same for less now. Go for the largest amp rating you can find, 2A minimum if you have tablets to charge.

Fuse the positive cable with no more that 5A and 3A would be better.

I'm not a fan of using 12v sockets as I've found they tend to vibrate out when travelling and of course they may not be where you want the USB sockets. :)

Doesn't matter really it's just to protect the cable. Unless you've used really, really thin cable

I've just fitted one of these 3 quid sockets and I suspect the fault with them overheating is due to the poor fit of the supplied spade connecters.

When I slid on the new spades, they were definitely loose. I squeezed them down a little with a pair of pliers - perfectly tight fit now.
Bad connections on a spade fitting will cause overheating.

Standard 3 quid socket in a nice surround - for the lounge.

I saw a USB adapter in the pound shop once "1 amp" it exclaimed. I bought it to see what was inside.

Just a single component, a voltage regulator in a tiny transistor package, no heat sink, just soldered across the connections. I plugged my phone in to see what happened. To my surprise it pinged and said "charging" wow I thought, and made the mistake of touching the component to see if it was warm  WARM? It flaming took a layer of my skin off! Binned it.

So anyway, that's what's in the cheap ones (y)

Linear voltage regulators always get hot :cautious:

Hi lads got it done 2amp fuse got a blue light showing but a solar panel battery should be ok thanks for your input Andy

Got mine from Toyota, used a 5 amp fuse, and wired in a switch.

Used Toyota because it fitted the blanks in the dash, remove the blank and the USB fitted in with just a little alteration at the back of it. I didn't want to drill holes in the dash.

Yes that is a disadvantage that happens with the dash sockets, but the marine sockets are deeper and the adapter is held very firmly. That reminds me, some cheap adapters aren't long enough to connect with the centre pin in the marine socket and look like they've failed.

These are the marine sockets:

I use these combined with :

Agree with the above. I use these high quality adapters...

And have worked great for 3 years , with no problems , i also plug my 12v laptop charger into the marine sockets and there is no problems there and the charger draws 6-7 amps from memory.

I've had this set up for over a years. Because the voltmeter, connected to the Hab batteries has be so handy in keeping an eye on the state of charge and
I've fitted a B2B charger this year. I thought I would buy a second voltmeter to monitor the Cab battery.

Now that looks exactly like the OEM cup holder that I have fitted in my Dethleffs Trend. How did you connect up the USB socket? And what is the small rocker switch for?

Small rocker isolates the usb socket, socket connected direct to vehicle battery 2 amp inline fuse fitted. Using vehicle battery cuts down on cable runs and is easily wired up, current draw if charging phones or tablet is minuscule so no worries re battery drain.

Thanks Stewart.

Thanks Stewart.
The two whitish bits either side of the small removable panel is Blutac, the clips holding this panel in place are very weak and removal of a tightish usb plug can pull out the panel, so an easy cure
