I have read a couple of "Winterisation" guides that suggest placing fish tank heaters in your tanks if you are going to places where you are at risk of freezing.

Seems that it would only be any good on hook up and would use a lot of juice, so insulation has to be better, and...... I wouldn't want to take a pee with electricity in my tank.

So is this just something people pad their guides out with or do people do it?

Personally i wouldn't use a fish tank heater!
Way too dodgy!
When i fitted out my transit i used an industrial insulator called Celotex!

Link Removed

Celotex is a foam board with foil on both sides to reflect heat and cold both in and out!
It comes in various thicknesess and is state of the art home insulation!

My transit was fitted with 50mm in the walls and 10mm under the floor!
Not once last winter did i have frost inside the van!

If you surround your tank in Celotex your water will not freeze!
Then all you have to do is wrap your pipework with the foam pipe lagging and you should be completely frost free!

This is what we use in construction!

PS: a 8ft x 4ft sheet of Celotex costs about £15 (cheaper than most fish tank heaters)
and cuts easily with a stanley knife!

How did you find out?::bigsmile:

2 switches next to each other both with water type heating symbol so asked guys that did 240 volt conversing.

I would like a hot rod though for 240v boiler heating to save LPG:winky:

Our bus already has a switch to put the heater on the tanks to stop them from freezing. I thought they all had that fitted as standard. :Smile:
