At long last, just two and a half years later than planned, we are off to France at the beginning of September. A four week trip, stopping off to see an old friend in the Nouvelle-Aquitaine region and then to see my wife's cousin near Aix. I think we've got the MH fairly well sorted but we haven't booked anything at all on the other side. Should we be thinking about booking campsites, or do you think we can just pitch up at aires and campsites as we go? Your experience and advice gratefully received! Thanks in advance.

We did a similar trip last year. Only pre-booked two sites over an eight week period. Even in Aix and other popular places we just turned up. Did the same from April to June this year.

You will be fine. The only places you might find full in September are campsites beside one of the big lakes in the south east. If you join Camping Car Parks (see numerous threads on here) you can check on-line if there are spaces at one of their aires. Otherwise just jog up and if a place is full (unlikely) go on to another.

We never book, also never plan where we will be staying either. In 40 odd years of touring France I have never found anywhere full, though a couple of places, once I have looked have decided not to stay.

We have travelled for many years around various areas of France and have never booked. The only time we had a problem was on the

Île de Ré

nr Rochelle. It was mid August and we tried 5 campsites which were all full but we did get the last place in an Aire so all was not lost. Lots of sites and lots of Aires so I wouldn't worry too much. Happy holiday and a safe trip.
