We have booked our first trip across the water, does anyone have a note or a route map of the the Aires or small campsites on the way to the Dordogne.

l would also be interested if anyone has information on using French Passion stops on the way.

Assuming that you have a smart phone, download a couple of apps. We use Park4Night and Camper Contact mainly, though others on here have other favorites. Both apps are free, but the paid for versions are not expensive and allow the downloading of information for when there's little or no phone signal. We never plan more than a day or so ahead, you never know what little gems you'll uncover along the way. Enjoy your trip.

Edit: Get the ACSI card as well, gets reduced prices at participating camp sites.

If it's your first trip to France, I couldn't recommend fp more, excellent scheme, all free and in our experience no one press's you to buy anything and is a wonderful way into the real France.
Only problem is it's hard to find one exactly where you need them but this is when park4night comes in to find you a nearby aire.

When Southbound from Dieppe I stop at this delightfully tranquil and spotless municipal site just North of Le Mans.....it doesn't open til May 1st. Handy for local shops and 5 mins drive from a SuperU hypermarket. Cost for m/h and 2 people is 12 euros a night (electricity extra).

That’s a fairly open-ended couple of questions!

There are several resources which will give you the locations of Aires and small campsites on your route, which at the moment only you know, or will when you have seen what is available to you.

Printed. 'All the Aires' has reviews and a lot of information on thousands of Aires. The ACSI guide to discounted campsites is very useful. MotorhomingFrance has a raft of information.

Online. CamperContact, searchforsites, park4night are used by most, and there are other French Language ones. One, or used in combination, will give you all you need.

There is a network of 'hybrid' Aire/campsites run by CampingCarPark, and Airepark reservations. Look at their offerings.

My advice would be to have look at your possible route, decide how quickly you want to be in the Dordogne, and then research a few places on the way. Be prepared to discover places so pleasant you will want to stay any extra night. Be prepared to change your plan as you go.

France Passion is a book with an accompanying website. All the places, which can be vineyards, farms, anything including privately owned fields are free. Of course you may be tempted to have a look to see if you want any of their honey, wine, cheese, biscuits, oysters, whatever but there is no obligation. There are simple rules, mostly concerned with politeness.

So, buy the resources, do some research, and you will enjoy your trip all the more.

I have deliberately not recommended anywhere, as what pleases me may not necessarily please you, and we all have different views - for example I don't care whether there are showers or not because we are completely self contained, but I do care if there is a boulangerie close by, and a bar, and that I might be able to stock up in a market, or visit a local feature. Others will take an opposite view.

It is so easy Motorhoming in France, it will take you a day or two to realise you can focus on what you can do, rather than what you can't. Relax, and enjoy.

Can’t help much on the drive down but be prepared for huge numbers of Brits in the Dordogne. We arrived in the northern Dordogne ( Beaulieu sur D) in September and it was so different from anywhere else on our route from Metz ambling south west over 3 weeks. Sites were almost full, and riverside pitches booked solid. We soon moved south to Languedoc and some peace and quiet! Take your time working your way south to see the real France, the Dordogne is far too busy in my opinion.

When are you going and how many stops are you looking to stay in? What are your interests etc? There are so many variables depending on your answers.

Thanks for the links & advice, it will be just the 2 of us 15 nights towards the end of August, we were thinking of heading towards Pointers, onto the Dordogne and then back up the west coast and through Normady to see some of the war memorials before catching the ferry home.

Falaise is an interesting town worthy of a stopover to the Dordogne. It has an imposing castle where William the conqueror was born and there is a small Aire below the castle and an Acsi site very close.
