Hi Guys
We've covered quite a bit of Europe but 2020 we'll explore Holland in our 8m motorhome with bikes on board.

Your recommendations please:-
Places you would defintely visit, but no cities or large towns.

Any really good campsites or Aires close to places to visit.

T h a n k Y o u one & all.
Me x

I know you said no cities but a shame not to visit Amsterdam and you can stay easily at City Camp - self service to get in and out. Short walk to a free ferry to the town centre

Thanks for reply but we've done Amsterdam as a city break.

If want a cheesy reply - Edam. And the tourist trap, next door, Volendam. Perfect for cycling and amazing scenary where we were camped 5 meters below sea level.

It's lovely in the sunshine.......

Go to Kukenhof gardens in the spring what a beautiful show they put on?

Gorinchem (pronounced and sometimes spelled Gorkem) is nice. You can stay at the harbour. Lovely coffee shops with apple cake, cute streets and, when we went, a tiny food market selling quite the best cheese we have ever tasted.
Arnhem is probably too big for you but the Kröller-Müller museum is wonderful and you can cycle round the Hoge Veluwe National Park that it is in.

Oh and the girl in the bank recommended Dordrecht (Dort) but we didn’t have time ..

Holland is pretty built up except in the north.
Over the last couple of years we have visited a few Aires but mostly in towns.

As Grianan we liked Gornichem

We stayed a couple of times in Alblasserdam which is great for cycling Kinderdijk. It is 30 mins from the Hook of Holland. We stayed there a few weeks ago for a few days three weeks ago in order to get the ferry only to realize on the day of the ferry that we were going from Zeebrugge!

From there the great water taxi takes you into Rotterdam or Dordrecht ( which is an interesting town full of record( vinyl )shops and antiques.

Gouda is a great town with a cheap Aire in the centre

Roermond has a nice Aire but again it is in the city which is great. ( It is also a ten minute walk to the huge designer outlet centre where Mrs billym managed to lighten the stock in the Dr. Marten store a few weeks ago)

Wassenaar is cool but we have only ever stayed on the fantastic Duinrell ( but only fantastic if you have kids to amuse)

The weirdest tourist place we visited( last summer) is Giethoom which is a cross between Venice and the rapids at Alton Towers. It is a town of about 2500 but visited by between 15000 and 20000 Chinese every year. We even met a couple of Chines motorhomes there who had driven all the way .

All the above places are easy for an 8 metre motorhome.

I know you said you don't want towns but I am bored!

On your way there, try Ghent - great Acsi campsite and good bike routes into town.

A second for Giethorn, Delft is nice or go to the top to Den Helder which has an aire on the harbour next to the Dutch Navy and life boat museums and you can get the ferry across to Texcel island.

Well we do Holland by boat so here's some interesting places but you'll have to check-up on dry-land parking...

Weesp
Lemmer
Sneek
Zwolle
Gorinchem*
Woudichem
Groningen*
Blokzeil
Stavoren
Amersfoort
Leuwarden*
Sloten
Meppel

Mostly small towns and villages, most in Friesland, all east of Amsterdam. * are the largest I think.

And if you're anywhere near Leopoldsburg in NE Belgium our yacht club has an excellent aire .....

Dunno if you're familiar with cycling in NL & BE but navigation is a joy. This explains it simply:
Then there's just download the app to your phone and navigate from pillar to post, literally
Dead easy-peasy. But watch out for dutch cyclists dismounting unexpectedly. They don't like hills, or as we call them "bridges"

Another vote for Edam. I spent two weeks earlier this year cycling from the campsite and still didn't cover all the cycle tracks.

Kukenhof gardens is a must early April is the best time we did Holland this Easter we stayed at Vakantiepark in Koningshof and cycled there past the bulb fields, a sight to see and smell, not so good if you have hay fever when you come across a field of hyacinths.

I can confirm the yacht club aire. Cheap beer and good cycling from there as well.

rarely see leopoldsburg mentioned, agree the aire there was good when i was staying around there, and the best ice cream to be had at vleugels down on the main road..
i do occasionally dream of their ice cream and warm cherries..

of course this is an old thread but a useful resource for others going to holland or belgium..
