Well being total beginners and only picking up the motorhome last thursday we did not really have the opportunity to plan for the Bank holiday weekend. After a couple of day trips we are happy with what all the knobs, switches and valves do, so yesterday thought we would book a couple of nights out over Bank Holiday with hook up, to try running on external power.

No chance! 6 million MH pitches with hook up, and every one of them taken! Note to self - if you want to go away bank holiday book early!

I suggested we just go to the lakes and find a layby and car parks, since it is only 2 nights. Seems it is too early to be that brave for SWMBO, though I was reassured by reading some of the posts on here.

End result - Sunday night at St Neots without electric. At least we get to test the beds and to experience a site, so all is not lost.

Hope you all have a fun bank holiday weekend

David

So? How did it go? Don't leave us hanging, please. Hope you really enjoy the experience. It might be worth coming to one of the meets if one is local as there will be lots of us there to help you with any questions or probs that crop us. Would be great to meet you both:thumb:

Are you a member of the Caravan Club as their CL's are all over the place and worth a try?
We use them all the time and great for a few days out!

Thanks for the encouragement and advice

We are members of C&CC, and we looked through every entry, even those we did not want to go to

Good advice though - hold your nerve and leave it till cancellation time. Not sure my wife's blood pressure would take it, but it definitely makes sense.

As for forgetting things, i guess it is almost guaranteed, though I seem to be cutting down trees to make lists...

Onwards and upwards - weekend nearly here :thumb:

well based on the advice I might phone St Neots on Saturday and see if I can get a pitch with electric - just want to try everything once - then I can relax :winky:

All the best

Worth a look tomorrow to see what availability may of come up. We wanted a long weekend at Grafham Water but could only get the Sat night, when I looked later in the day they had had a cancellation so we got our long weekend after all. We are staying home this BH due to sailing committments the following 2 weekends so enjoy your time away and we may see you on a Funsters meet sometime.

We are off to Llangollen, C&CC THS unless the weather looks abismal then we might go East, depends which way the wind blows, that's the beauty of a MH!
Join a club prob Caravan Club their Clubsites seem cheaper than the C&CC. then keep an eye on the Temporary Holiday Sites, cheap & cheerful-tou won't get electric but for a couple of nights it shouldn't be a problem especially if you've got a Fred on the roof (our nickname for our solar panel) he's always drinking!!!:ROFLMAO:

You will soon get used to the systems of booking. You can of course wait until last minute and see if their are any cancellations, as you will hear a lot on here, people book several sites for the same period and then go to the one they prefer and don't cancel the others. Strange habit I know but there you go  The other tip is to plan ahead early. I am in both CC and C&CC and plan to go away every fortnight on weekenders, so about February we select our sites and as soon as the bookings open we get in there and get them booked. I know that this takes some of the spontaneity out of the freedom of camping but everyone and their dogs seem to enjoy this recreational pastime these days, hence shortage of pitches if you leave it too late.

Just enjoy :thumb:

Thanks big Momma. It is a question of getting into the swing of it I am sure. Maybe a bit masochistic but the learning part is as much fun as I know it will be when we are totally at ease with the process, and go with the flow.

this group is so much help as well :thumb:

I have been M'homing now for 12 years and I am still asking questions from the many experienced forum members :winky: I was not blessed with a mechanical or technical mind so am very grateful to those that are. However, just having the experience of Motorhoming sometimes means that you can answer other's questions. That can happen after your first 2-3 trips, it may be recommendations for a site, a technical problem that happened to you which you got resolved in fact anything at all. So, now you are a Motorhomer, be prepared to share your wisdom and experience ::bigsmile:
