Hello everyone, I’m not sure if I posted in the right section so I do apologise to the admin if I should actually post elsewhere.

I am a motorhome newbie and I would to purchase a brand new one that is :

9m or less
Mercedes Chassis
Comfortable for a family of 4
Budget is £200,000 max

I have researched Adria, Carthago, Hymer. Are there any brands I should look at? We are only going to drive around the UK for now.

Thank you

Wow- exciting 😄 I would be terrified driving a 9 m van so wow again. Most smaller vans are ok for 4 if they have 4 beds as all vans will be short on space at times.. make sure they all have 4 seatbelts as it is amazing how many don’t match beds n belts . Also others on here will have a lot more advice but possibly try before you buy ie hire one for a week even if it isn’t same spec. Ad when buying choose dealer carefully , lots of helpful reviews on here . Xx

Hello, thank you for your reply.
I would be terrified with driving a 12m one or left hand drive. Haha! i am quite comfortable with driving in the UK having lived here previously for a few years and I’m sure with rear camera, it won’t be a problem reversing. Problem is I have to research which tight coastal or historic roads are not suitable.

We would prefer a reasonably spacious one for the child and a friend might want to chip in to share the cost. If it’s just 2 of us , I’m sure I’ll have more choices for smaller ones.

The good news is that your budget will get you a lot of choice!

But the first question is do you have a C1 licence? You should have it automatically if you passed your test before 1997. Without that you will only be able able to drive motorhomes with a Maximum Authorised Mass of 3500kg. If you don't have that licence, you will not be able to get a motorhome anywhere near 9m long. And even then you will find it nigh impossible to get one with enough payload for a family of 4. I note you have a Singapore flag, so if that is where you live you can ignore this paragraph, which only relates to the UK. Instead you will need to check your local laws.

Choosing your first motorhome is difficult in that you never know whether or not the layout works until you try it for a while. Therefore, the perceived wisdom is that you will probably get your ideal motorhome on your 3rd purchase. We were lucky and got our "keeper" on our second try! You will usually lose a lot of money when buying new and selling quickly. So the best advice is to buy a cheaper used one for your first motorhomes. That will save you a lot of money if you get your choice wrong. The other reason for buying used is that there are very long waits for orders for new motorhome. As I understand it dealers are quoting delivery times in 2024. And, as many will testify, supply problems with components make any "promised" date illusionary.

As for your question on which to look for you could add Neisman & Bischoff, Dethleff, Burstner, Laika (all part of the Hymer group), as well as Rapido and Voyageur.

Finally, you only get 5 free posts on this forum. After that you are a "free member" so you can only read posts and cannot post any more. I strongly recommend that you become a subscriber, which gives you full access to the forum and also the many rallies and meets that are organised. There should be a banner saying "subscribe now" at the top of this page which you should click on. It will be the best £20 you will ever spend on your motorhome, and we always save a lot more than that each year with the advice and help we get from fellow members.

Hi - We opted for Carthago in the end, but also had Neisman and Frankia on the list.
