Just got back from first mot and was informed the the rear springs twin leaf on our fiat ducato are on or very close to the bump stops Our van is a Vantage max 5.99mt. Has any one else had the problem and what is the best way to sort spring assisters, air helpers etc looks like a job when we get back from Portugal
Thanks

They are not “bump stops” they are spring assistors and it’s quite normal to be about 25mm from them. If you require more then fit rear air assist.

My previous van was sitting on the 'assistors' pretty much all the time. The rear sat really low. And they were mashed up and really needed replacing. I swapped them out for EasyTop semi-air suspension. It made the van handle much better and improved the comfort on the larger lumps in the road.

I replaced my springs with 3 leaf heavy duty springs. Made the van sit higher at the rear and gave a much more confident ride round corners.

He must be a learner, the spring assisters are attached at both ends, there were on mine anyway till I removed them.

As said, they are not bump stops and it is quite normal, and expected according to Fiat, for the suspension assister cones to be in contact with the leaf springs under even moderate loads. The DVSA circulated guidance to testing stations to that effect in their "Matters of Testing" publication, stating that such vehicles should not be rejected under that criteria. I would be asking the tester why he is not aware of that, although it is only an advisory notice and he probably saw it as an opportunity to add to the number of advisory notices issued, for performance monitoring purposes, without inconveniencing the owner.

Fit air bags. The rear brake bias sensor will wear your rear discs out, I was replacing the rear pads twice for every front set, when the discs needed replacing I got GoodYear air bags fitted and now they all wear normally.

I would definitely contest the advisary. When you sell it's quite likely that one of the first things anyone will do is check the mot history. I would phone the garage first if they are unwilling to help ask them who to contact to raise it as an issue.

This is post #160 for the OP, where there is an email from VOSA confirming they are spring assistors, not bump stops 👍

I was looking into fitting Sumosprings which replace the standard spring assistors. They are in contact with the springs all the time.

However, I cant find many reviews in the UK about them, and I fear the way they fit would lead some MOT testers to fail the van as there is no gap between the vehicle spring and the Sumospring.

Anyone got them fitted?
